JDT ends 25-year wait to lift Malaysia Cup

SHAH ALAM: The Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) football team have ended the 25-year wait to be crowned Malaysia Cup champions after a 2-0 win over defending champions Kedah in the final at the Shah Alam Stadium here, tonight.

The victory saw JDT successfully completing their trophy collection within four years, after winning the Super League, FA Cup and Sumbangsih Cup since Tunku Mahkota Johor (TMJ) Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim helmed the club in 2013.

In front of over 80,000 supporters, coach Ulisses Morais’s side went on the pitch without prolific striker Mohamad Ghaddar who started on the bench, however, it only took them three minutes to take the lead through Mohamad Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razak’s header off of a corner by team captain Mohammad Safiq Rahim.

Stung by the goal, Kedah launched attack after attack but the competition’s top scorer, Sandro Da Silva failed to finish for the Red Eagles.

JDT almost doubled the lead in the 15th minute after Kedah failed to clear the ball from the penalty area, however, Ignacio Insa’s shot went just pass the post.

The Southern Tigers went close to making it 2-0 through striker Gabriel Miguel Guerra in the 22nd minute, but Kedah goalkeeper Mohd Ifwat Akmal Che Kassim’s quick reflexes put the ball out to keep the score 1-0 till the break.

In the second-half, Mohd Nidzam Adzha Yusoff’s men came out fierce to defend the cup they won last year.

Kedah midfielder Baddrol Bakhtiar missed a golden opportunity to equalise when his uncontrolled header was tipped by goalkeeper Mohd Izham Tarmizi Roslan before striking off the post in the 56th minute.

Baddrol once again squandered a chance in the 67th minute, when his shot in the penalty box merely hit the woodwork.

JDT’s second goal came in the 63rd minute, after Ahmad Hazwan Bakri’s cross from the left was slotted in by Gonzalo Gabriel Cabrera to seal the victory for JDT.

For the record, the Malaysia Cup is JDT’s second domestic championship trophy this season, after winning the Super League recently.

Felipe Massa to retire from Formula One for second time

LONDON: Brazilian driver Felipe Massa announced his retirement from Formula One at the end of the season, and for the second time, on Saturday.

The 36-year-old had been due to retire last season but was recalled by the Williams team after Valtteri Bottas left for Mercedes following the surprise retirement of 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg.

After an emotional send-off in Brazil last year, Massa was back in the cockpit a few months later.

“As you know, last year I decided to announce my retirement in Formula One but because of the Williams request I decided to do another season,” the former Ferrari driver said in a video message posted on social media.

“But this time will be my last race in Brazil of Formula One and my last race in Abu Dhabi,” he added, thanking his family, fans and sponsors and making clear he was not retiring from racing entirely.

“I really hope that you can support me next year or maybe in the future in other races and in other categories,” he said.

The Brazilian Grand Prix, the penultimate round of the season, is next week with Abu Dhabi ending the season on Nov. 26.

Williams have yet to announce their 2018 lineup, with several candidates in the frame including Poland’s Robert Kubica. Canadian rookie teenager Lance Stroll is sure to stay, however.

Massa won 11 races with Ferrari and finished runner-up to Lewis Hamilton, now a four-times world champion, by a single point in the 2008 season.

His last victory was at the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix, where he won new fans for his dignified and sporting response when Hamilton seized the title by taking fifth place on the last corner of the last lap.

In 2009, he suffered a severe head injury and was in a coma for several days after being hit on the helmet in Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying by a spring shed from the Brawn of compatriot Rubens Barrichello.

Massa joined Williams in 2014, helping the former champions to take third place in the constructors’ championship that year and in 2015.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to work with him,” said deputy principal Claire Williams in a team statement.

“We are especially grateful that he agreed to postpone his retirement from Formula One for a year, after Valtteri joined Mercedes, which demonstrated the depth of the relationship we built during our time together.

“We appreciate that it wasn’t an easy decision for him to return, after having such an emotional send-off at the end of last year.”

Imam Besar Masjid Al-Aqsa puji Malaysia bantu Palestin

PUTRAJAYA: Imam Besar Masjid Al-Aqsa Sheikh Dr Ekrima Said Sabri memuji peranan berterusan Malaysia membantu umat Islam Palestin khususnya dalam isu pembebasan Masjid Al-Aqsa.

Hadir sama Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Yayasan MyAQSA Noorazman Mohd Samsuddin.
