MO,10/1/2018, MIRI: A gas leak along a section of the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline occurred early Wednesday in the mountains of Long Luping, near Lawas in Limbang. Petronas confirmed that the leak occurred at 1.45am along the pipeline at Long Luping but stressed that it had been contained and that there was no explosion as claimed by some villagers.
“Petronas confirms that a leak had occurred at the Long Luping section of the gas pipe. “Our emergency response team has been mobilised to the site. “The situation is under control and there is no impact to the environment or the villages,” it said in a statement on Wednesday morning. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department also said that numerous sections of the pipeline and valves had been shut off as a precaution.
Investigations are being carried out to determine how the leak occurred. The department has instructed its personnel in Lawas and Limbang to visit the site to conduct further investigations. “The Long Sukang section of the pipeline is also being checked,” it said. The 600km pipeline is a RM4bil project by Petronas to channel gas from Kimanis in Sabah to Bintulu in northern Sarawak for processing and export.
On June 11, 2014 an explosion occurred in the hills of Lawas district when a leak happened along a section of the pipeline. No one was injured in that incident.
