Cold snap grips the peninsula

floods

MO,13/1/2018, PETALING JAYA: It has been cold, damp and, in some places, extremely wet. The warm clothes are out and people are all wrapped up. The west of Peninsular Malaysia is in the grip of a cold snap, with the Klang Valley experiencing the coldest weather it had in months, with temperatures dipping to 22°C. Kuala Pilah in Negri Sembilan was among the places that registered a low 21°C since midnight, very much lower than the normal 31°C to 32°C, according to the Meteorological Department.

For once, Cameron Highlands felt like Europe, reportedly recording 15°C yesterday. Meteorological Department director-general Alui Bahari said the cold weather was the usual phenomenon during the period of the northeast monsoon, from November to March. “The cold weather occurs mainly in the interior and inland areas. Between midnight and early today, the meteorological stations in southern Peninsular Malaysia recorded a minimum 22°C and a maximum 25°C compared to the normal 30°C to 31°C,” he said.

Alui said the situation also occurred because it was cloudy and drizzling in several states such as Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka and there was moderate rain in Pahang and Johor. “However, the states in northern Peninsular Malaysia did not experience a big drop in temperature,” he said, adding the weather is expected to return to normal after the rain eases off.

On Twitter, Malaysians expressed shock at the cool weather, but they were loving it, too. “The weather in Malaysia is actually cold. This literally does not happen all the time living in a tropical climate,” @mabeses wrote. Even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak weighed in on the weather discussion upon his arrival home from Saudi Arabia, tweeting yesterday morning: “Wah, it’s really cold in Malaysia today, like Jeddah! Alhamdulillah back home safe.”

Some netizens, however, lamented having to be all wrapped up in Malaysia. “I had to wear a jacket, which feels dumb in the tropics,” tweeted @diandujour. The big question now is how long the cold snap is going to last. Some weather forecasters have said that many parts of Malaysia will stay cool and cloudy for a while but the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) says there is no sign of temperatures dipping further.

It said the current phenomenon is actually due to the north-east monsoon affecting the east coast of the peninsula. “The rainy season in the area is pushing the north-eastern wind and the clouds to the west. “That is why we have seen less sun these past few days and the temperature has not risen,” said a MetMalaysia spokesman.

He added that the cold spell is expected to end tomorrow. “We can expect to see more sun from Sunday onwards,” he said.

MACC looking at how RM305mil was paid

SPRM_MACC_malaysian_anti-corruption_commission_27072015_TMIKAMAL_ARIFFIN_02

MO,13/1/2018, PETALING JAYA: Investigators are now looking at the process of the RM305mil payment given to companies appointed to conduct the feasibility studies for the Penang undersea tunnel. Sources familiar with the case said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was also looking into the competency of the companies and experts appointed to determine if they had the ability to conduct such a study.

It is learnt that there is a set expertise standard to conduct feasibility studies, including that of undersea tunnels. “It doesn’t matter if the experts are from the government or private firms, what is important is that they are competent enough to carry out the feasibility and detailed design studies for the project,” sources said.

When contacted, MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki said the anti-graft agency raided nine more companies in Penang and Kuala Lumpur yesterday to gather more documents. The investigating team also recorded statements from eight people, including a company secretary, advisers and consultants. Azam said more “important witnesses” would be called up for questioning.

“Give us some space to carry out our investigations. We are still in the process of recording statements from important witnesses that we believe may help to wrap up the probe,” he said. The Star had reported that the graft-busters were zooming in on the land swaps of two plots of land in Bandar Tanjung Pinang. Two high-ranking bosses of development and construction companies were remanded on Wednesday in connection with the case.

The major swoop on the controversial Penang undersea tunnel began on Tuesday when MACC raided seven premises of state government agencies and three property development and construction firms. On Thursday, MACC raided 12 more locations in Penang and Kuala Lumpur and questioned 12 people.

Neymar ke Old Trafford Manchester United sanggup bida 443 juta pound

Mengapa The Red Devils sanggup membuat pelaburan sebesar itu? Jawapannya kerana Neymar bukan calang-calang pemain.

Buktinya baru 22 perlawanan bersama PSG, penyerang prolifik berusia 25 tahun itu sudah meledak 20 jaringan.

BACA: Neymar bukan lagi bayang-bayang Messi

Memahami betapa cerewetnya pengurus Manchester United, Jose Mourinho dalam memilih pemain bagi membarisi skuadnya, kesungguhan untuk mendapatkan Neymar kerana kelab itu ketandusan kejuaraan Liga Perdana Inggeris (EPL) dan Liga Juara -Juara Eropah sejak beberapa musim lalu.

BACA: Jual mahal, Manchester City rela lupakan Alexis Sanchez

Kedah rancang buka pelabuhan baharu gantikan Pulau Pinang

Malaysians want a safe digital world, says Khairy Read

khairy

MO,13/1/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: A safe digital world is one of the aspirations voiced by Malaysians under the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogues and this can be achieved through parental awareness, says Khairy Jamaluddin. The Youth and Sports Minister said the digital space was both a boom and a boon for children and youths as it helps in learning and fostering creativity.

“But at the same time, it is also filled with threats such as online predators and cyberbullies. “So parents must play an important role in helping their children to navigate the digital world safely. The crux of the problem today is with easy access to the Internet, children are vulnerable to bad influences every day,” he said at the launch of Celcom Axiata Bhd’s Parents Unite for Online Safety programme, an initiative to advocate public awareness for online safety, at Menara Celcom yesterday.

He said apps such as KidSafe with parental controls, developed by Celcom Axiata and launched in September last year, could be useful. Apart from threats within the digital world, he said parents should also be aware of the negative impact of too much screen time for their children. “It takes away real human interaction, leading to impaired social learning. Children will get addicted to the screen posing serious consequences,” he said.

On the programme, Khairy said Celcom Axiata would equip 175 1Malaysia Internet Centres around the country with the KidSafe app. Celcom deputy chief executive officer Azwan Khan said the app could be used to monitor usage of the Internet and filter content which was unsuitable for children and youths.

Azwan opined that some Malaysian parents were still not aware of the dangers faced by their children online. “While we can see bruises from physical bullying, cyberbullying is a lot more difficult to detect,” he said. Also present at the launch were Celcom CEO Michael Kuehner and chief corporate officer Zuraida Jamaluddin.
