Store Credit Card: When to Open a Store Credit Card

No: You’re not sure about the interest rate

9dream studio/Shutterstock

Typically, the interest rates of store credit cards are higher than other credit cards. According to a new poll released by LendEDU—they queried consumers about store-branded credit cards—the takeaways included that 45 percent didn’t know the interest rate on their store-branded cards, and 65 percent regularly carried a balance on their store-branded cards. Here are some more tips about the tricks and traps of credit cards.

No: You’ve already got a handful of cards

Africa Studio/Shutterestock

Natasha Rachel Smith, personal finance expert at topcashback.com, based in Montclair, New Jersey, says your credit score is determined by the number of credit cards open, credit utilization, how long you’ve had cards open, and how many credit applications have taken place during a short period of time. “New credit card inquiries remain on your credit report for two years, and applying for too many at the same time can dent your score,” explains Smith. “While it is a known factor that when borrowing money your interest rate is dependent on your credit score, retail cards charge exorbitant interest rates regardless of how wonderful your credit worthiness is. Shoppers with great credit scores are still subjected to eye-watering interest rates well above 20 percent.” Learn more about how to keep your credit score high.

No: You haven’t shopped for a lower-interest credit card

Brian Karimzad, VP of research at comparecards.com by LendingTree, who is based in New York, suggests consumers should get financing before heading to the stores. “Shop around for a zero percent deal before you go shopping if you must finance your purchases,” he advises. “Zero percent deals on bank-branded cards you get online or in the bank branch rarely have deferred interest clauses, so they are true zero percent deals that won’t charge you interest for the full promotional period, even if you don’t pay the balance in full.”

No: You can’t afford what’s on the counter

If you’re not a disciplined shopper, you might actually end up spending more than you anticipated with a store credit card, says Smith. And if you’re tempted to get the card to cover your extra purchases, it’s time to say no. Use these 12 tips to see if your shopping habits are getting you in trouble.

“For example, when you are accepted for a retail card, you could believe you’re getting an additional percentage taken off so have more money to play with. This old trick encourages many people to spend frivolously, which is exactly how the store wants you to behave. The more uncontrolled your attitude is about money, the more profit it will make,” she says. Here are some more strategies for keeping your spending under control.

Yes: The perks include discounts and special sales

If you can keep a handle on your shopping and spending, some store-branded cards do offer benefits, like sales and point-of-purchase discounts. “One of the biggest benefits to a retail card is the exclusive sales and discounts you may receive during the course of being an account holder, if applicable with that store,” continues Smith. “While that’s a simple marketing ploy to get you to spend more money, you might not receive these discounts if you didn’t have the store card. If you’re a disciplined shopper and can avoid overspending along with always paying your balance off in full, you’ll be rubbing your hand with glee over the extra savings you might get on items you would’ve bought anyway.” Here are some tips from psychology experts on spending less when you’re shopping.

Yes: You can earn rewards

Ipek Morel/Shutterstock

Another benefit a store card may offer is a rewards program that lets you earn points every time you buy something from the store. “Rewards are often in the form of credits toward future purchases,” says Philadelphia-based personal finance expert, Janet Alvarez, of Wise Bread, a personal finance site. “The best store cards offer rewards or discounts of up to 5 percent of the amount spent.”

Yes: Amazon’s credit card

Denys Prykhodov/Shutterstock

If you are a Prime member, opening an Amazon credit card might be very beneficial due to their rewards targeting members and special financing offers, advises Smith. “Amazon’s credit card is fairly new and comes with great promotions. Plus, it gives members a chance to earn and save more money,” she says. “However, the APR is fairly high and this credit card should only be opened for people who can afford to pay off their credit card bill in full every month to take advantage of the discount benefits.”

Tachycardia: Normal Reasons Your Heart Is Racing

Why is my heart racing?

HeartMega Pixel/Shutterstock

Considering the incredible job your heart does—keeping you alive, no less, by pumping blood to provide your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs—you probably don’t often think about how hard it works every second of the day. To be precise, your heart beats anything from 60 to 100 beats a minute. (That’s between 86,400 and 144,00 beats a day.) If your heart beats more than 100 times per minute, it’s known as tachycardia. It might sound serious, but it’s unlikely to be a sign of a heart attack. Here are nine more probable reasons your heart is racing.

Stress

HeartSorakrai Tangnoi/Shutterstock

When stress releases catecholamines or hormones like adrenaline or cortisol, these increase heart rate and blood pressure, which results in an elevated pulse, explains South Florida cardiologist Adam Splaver, MD, from NanoHealth Associates. This is a normal response to stress and resolves itself when you deal with the stress. Try relaxation exercises, deep breathing, yoga, and tai chi to quell the anxiousness. Here are more ways to prevent stress and ward off heart disease.

Too many stimulants

HeartJarun Ontakrai/Shutterstock

Stimulants like caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and medicines for ADHD can also increase blood pressure and give you a racing heart. If these are triggers for you, stick to a healthy diet and limit your intake of caffeine. The Mayo Clinic says adults can have up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day—the equivalent of four cups of coffee, 10 cans of soda, or two energy drinks.

Dehydration

HeartOnchira Wongsiri/Shutterstock

When you are dehydrated, your effective blood volume decreases, which lowers blood pressure. This, in turn, forces your heart to work harder and beat faster to compensate. To recover from dehydration, stop what you are doing and rest in a cool place, such as in the shade or an air-conditioned room. Put your feet up, remove all excess items of clothing, and drink a water, juice, or a sports drink to replace fluids and minerals. Drink two quarts of cool liquids over the next two to four hours and continue to drink plenty of fluids in the next 24 hours. WebMD suggests mixing one quart of water, 1/2 teaspoon of table salt, and six teaspoons of sugar for an inexpensive, at-home rehydration drink.

Lack of sleep

HeartAfrica Studio/Shutterstock

One common cause of a racing heart is poor sleep. Lack of sleep increases stress hormones, which drive up your heart rate and blood pressure. The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep per night for adults.

Pain

HeartBlurryMe/Shutterstock

According to an article published in Mayo Clinical Proceedings, acute pain triggers a stress response that can lead to increased blood pressure, faster heart rate, dialated puils, and higher blood levels of cortisol, a stress hormone. Whether the pain is caused by a fracture, a sprain, an open wound, a burn, or a condition like appendicitis or pancreatitis, treating the underlying cause will return the heart to its normal rate. Look out for these signs you could be heading for a heart attack.

Pregnancy

HeartTekkol/Shutterstock

During pregnancy, a woman’s heart is under increased demands due to the needs of the fetus. According to a Duke University Medical Center article published in the Merck Manual, by the end of pregnancy, the uterus is receiving one-fifth of a mother’s blood supply, and cardiac output (the amount of blood pumped by the heart) increases by 30 to 50 percent. This results in a pregnancy heart rate of 80 to 90 beats per minute, and it’s usually perfectly normal. If you have any concerns, however, make an appointment with your OB/GYN to get the all-clear.

Thyroid problems

HeartDin Mohd Yaman/Shutterstock

Your thyroid gland pumps out a variety of hormones that control and direct your major organs. Insufficient thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) can slow your heart rate, while excess thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) increase your heart rate. Check to see if you have any other silent thyroid symptoms you should watch out for. A wide range of medications are available to treat hyperthyroidism; beta blockers can be prescribed specifically to deal with a quick heart rate.

Cold or fever

HeartBewzester/Shutterstock

If you have signs of a cold or fever, like a high temperature, sneezing, and coughing, your heart rate may increase. This is because your body needs to work harder than usual to fight the infection. As soon as you the cold passes, your heart rate should return to normal. Be sure you don’t ignore these signs that you actually do have an unhealthy heart.

Timbalan Pengarah Jabatan Perisikan SPRM kecewa Selangor enggan tandatangan IBR

SHAH ALAM 24 JANUARI 2017. Mantan Pengarah SPRM Negeri Selangor, Datuk Wan Ramli Wan Abdullah (kanan) menyerah nota serah tugas kepada Pengarah SPRM Negeri Selangor baru, Datuk Alias Salim (kiri) sambil disaksikan oleh Pengarah Kanan Jabatan Siasatan Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM), Datuk Simi Abdul Ghani (tengah) sempena Majlis Serah Terima Tugas Pengarah Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM) Negeri Selagor di Bangunan SPRM Negeri Selangor. STR/MUHAMMAD SULAIMAN

MO, 24/1/2018, SHAH ALAM: Timbalan Pengarah Jabatan Perisikan Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM), Datuk Wan Ramli Wan Abdullah mengakui kecewa gagal memujuk Kerajaan PKR Selangor menandatangani Ikrar Bebas Rasuah (IBR).

Majlis disaksikan Pengarah Kanan Jabatan Siasatan SPRM, Datuk Simi Abdul Ghani.

Ditanya alasan Kerajaan Selangor enggan menandatangani IBR, Wan Ramli berkata, hanya Mohamed Azmin boleh menjawab persoalan itu.

Tahun lalu, Ketua Pesuruhjaya SPRM, Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad beberapa kali meminta Kerajaan Selangor untuk menandatangani IBR kerana hanya negeri itu belum berbuat demikian.

Sebelum ini, Kerajaan DAP Pulau Pinang juga enggan menandatangani IBR, namun pada 28 Jun lalu, Ketua Menteri, Lim Guan Eng bersetuju berbuat demikian berserta tambahan 10 langkah integriti kerajaan negeri.

Asking for a Receipt at McDonald’s Can Get You the Freshest Food | Reader’s Digest

Why-You-Should-Always-Ask-for-a-Receipt-at-McDonald’s_133078556_Radu-BercanRadu Bercan/Shutterstock

If you catch a craving for burger and fries, McDonald’s is always a short drive away. But to ensure you get a fresh meal every time, you might need to take one extra step.

Kamran Adnan, who says he worked for the fast food chain for one year, claims the staff gives extra perks to customers who ask for a receipt. Doing so will practically guarantee you’re served the freshest food, he wrote in a Quora post.

According to Adnan, McDonald’s employees are trained to watch out for “mystery shoppers” or “Gapbusters”—people who are paid to visit McDonald’s restaurants and rate their experience—at certain points in the day. These shoppers tend to dine between 12 to 2 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m., he says.

Because their reviews factor into the store’s rating, “every store manager will do everything to ensure this rating is as positive as possible,” Adnan said.

These undercover diners are typically reimbursed for their purchase, so they will ask for a receipt. This signals to employees that they might have a “Gapbuster” on their hands. Not only will they make sure to serve that customer first, but they will also give them the freshest food possible.

While McDonald’s has not confirmed Adnan’s claims yet, it can’t hurt to ask for a receipt next time. Nothing beats a tray full of steaming hot French fries, after all. Don’t miss even more mind-blowing facts about McDonald’s.
