Types of Heart Disease and Their Warning Signs

Coronary artery disease

Clogged arteries often lead to this type of heart disease, which accounts for one in seven deaths in the U.S. each year, according to the American Heart Association. Plaque buildup in the main blood vessels of the heart stymie blood flow to the muscle. “This is the number one type of heart disease that we take care of,” says Sandhya Balaram, MD, associate professor of cardiovascular surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Since arteries clog over time due to a variety of risk factors—high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a sedentary lifestyle—many patients don’t notice any symptoms until there’s significant blockage. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, or even heart attack. These are the silent signs of a heart attack.

Valve disease

The heart is made up of four main valves, which open and close like doors to control blood flow. They’re usually soft like tissue paper, says Dr. Balaram, but when they become calcified (hard deposits of calcium accumulate) they become stiff and narrow, reducing blood flow. Valves can also not close properly, causing blood to leak back into the heart. Here are 15 life-saving tips to prevent heart disease.

Heart attack

Every year, 735,000 Americans suffer a heart attack, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is completely cut off, usually by a blood clot, causing the muscle to begin dying. Symptoms include: pain in the area between the shoulder blades, neck or jaw pain or discomfort, pain in the left arm, shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, clammy skin, sweating, or a feeling of impending doom.

Arrhythmia

The heart usually has its own regular rhythm of beats. But when it beats too slow (less than 60 beats per minute), too fast (more than 100 beats per minute), or irregularly, this could signal arrhythmia. This can impact how much blood the heart can pump and is treated with medication or a pacemaker.

Pericardial disease

The heart is surrounded by a thin tissue sac called the pericardium; when this becomes inflamed due to infection, heart surgery, heart attack, cancer, or an autoimmune disease, it can cause symptoms like chest pain, low-grade fever, or increased heart rate. Treatment may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs), steroids, or antibiotics. Here are 30 proven ways to reduce your risk of heart disease.

Spreading fake news, an act of sabotage

fake_news_1_.jpg_1517466885

MO,1/2/2018, PETRA JAYA: Spreading fake news about other people or the country is an act of sabotage, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said. In voicing his support for the proposal to introduce a new law to regulate fake news, Awang Tengah said the despicable act of spreading lies will create tension among the society and ruin the country’s reputation. He said the new law proposed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak recently will be the right mechanism to address the problem from escalating and incur losses to the nation.

“At the same time, the proposal to formulate the new law should not be construed as a means to curtail freedom of speech, which is alive in Malaysia. “The presence of social media accounts used by political organisation that are affiliated to the opposition is proof that the government embrace the freedom of speech. “However, let us be responsible in sharing information and avoid from spreading lies for personal interest,” he said.

Najib, during his visit to Kelantan on Sunday, said the new law to address issues related to the spread of fake news would help to preserve national harmony. He had also said that the spread of fake news is a threat to the nation’s political stability and prosperity.

How Much Money You Can Make Renting on Airbnb

AirbnbKashin/Shutterstock

You’ve heard of Airbnb, right? It’s the trusted community marketplace where you can cash in on your spare bedroom, entire house, or even tree house—seriously, there are 1,400 tree houses (and 3,000 castles) currently listed on Airbnb—by renting it out to vacationers or other travelers passing through your city. And it’s hopping! According to Airbnb, it has 4 million listings in more than 190 countries, and its properties have hosted more than 260 million guests and counting.

Tempted to list your pad to make some extra cash? Airbnb hosts make an average of $924 per month and nearly half of all hosts make more than $500 per month, according to Priceonomics. That’s more than any other providers in the so-called “gig economy” (made up of short term workers and service-providers, many of whom travel from place to place to pursue short term “gigs”), reports the website.

So, how can you turn your own house into a gig-economy goldmine? First and foremost, you need to make sure it’s legal in your city, and, if you rent, not a violation of your lease. “Laws about renting out an apartment for a short-term stay vary by city,” shares Fast Company. “A law in New York, for instance, makes it illegal to rent an apartment for less than 30 days if the owner is not around.” There are also tax and insurance laws, but not all of them work against you. In fact, the new tax law enacted in 2018 may entitle you to a hefty tax deduction for the expenses you incur in setting up your Airbnb business.

Once you know it’s legal, try a testing out a few nearby Airbnb venues as a guest. That way, you’ll get a flavor for what works, what doesn’t, and what you’ve got to offer, Fast Company suggests.

Once you’re convinced it’s right for you,  here’s what you can do to maximize your Airbnb business:

  • Take fantastic photos
  • Include hotel-like amenities (mini toiletries, towels, entertainment, water, etc.)
  • Be realistic about your pricing (Remember: Even with those amenities, you’re not actually a hotel!)

Plus, don’t miss these other things to keep in mind before renting your home on Airbnb from people who have done it.

YANGON: Satu bom petrol telah dilontar ke halaman villa Canselor Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi di sini, lapor AFP.

Try WD-40

Examine your squeaking shoes to see if there’s a gap where your heels came loose. Once you find the trouble spot, put some superglue in the seam around the heel, then hold it together or use a clamp to keep it tight until the glue dries more. If you’re worried about missing the mark with unsightly glue, take your pair to a cobbler to do the dirty work professionally.

No patrol cars from China, only for the movies

Rumah-pegawai-polis-ditembak

MO,1/2/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: There are no police vehicles from China used in Malaysia. Police said this in a statement, denying claims that Chinese vehicles were used by the force in the country. A photo of two Malaysian police vehicles emblazoned with Chinese characters was posted on social media with the allegation. The two vehicles in the photo were props used for filming a movie, the statement said adding the claims posted on a Facebook fan page are false.

The fan page, which used a profile picture and a name of a former top national leader, questioned the Home Ministry for allowing the use of the Chinese characters on Malaysian police vehicles. “Those two vehicles were used by a film company to shoot a film entitled ‘The Original Sin’ in Putrajaya.

“The film tells the life of a policeman in a fictional city Han. It is to be distributed in China,” the statement said. It added that the police took the allegation seriously as it clearly intended to create a bad perception towards a government agency. It advised the public to be prudent and careful in using the social media platform, as well as refrain from posting something which is potentially slanderous.

“Don’t just simply upload a posting without verifying the fact as it would lead to a negative implication to certain parties.” The statement also said it’s inappropriate for anyone to misuse pictures and names of prominent figures in their fan page’s profile to promote their own agenda.
