Warm Winter Getaways for Families That Won’t Break the Bank

Kaanapali, Maui

Located on marvelous Maui’s west coast, Kaanapali has it all: Fabulous beaches, exceptional snorkeling, gorgeous scenery, and plenty of kid-friendly places to eat and play (plus flights to Hawaii are cheaper than ever). It’s also where you’ll find a number of full-service vacation rental condominiums, right on the beach that allows you to spread out with the family and make some meals in your own kitchen—a money-and-time saver. For full-service accommodations with a friendly price, the Kaanapali Hotel should be your number one choice. The longest standing hotel in Kaanapali, it has a prime location on the golden Pacific sands and offers complimentary Hawaiian activities for the whole family, including pineapple cutting, print making, and ukulele lessons; plus kids get points and prizes for joining in the fun diversions.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta-Cane-Dominican-republicValentin Valkov/Shutterstock The beaches here—among the best surf for families anywhere—will fulfill all your warm weather dreams with warm turquoise waters, pillowy sand, and miles of uninterrupted coastline. Flanking the beach like a row of starfish are a multitude of family-friendly all-inclusive resorts; the good news about the number of properties is that they provide competition both in amenities and pricing. The bad news is you’ll need to choose one from a large number of options. With young kids, consider the Grand Palladium Bavaro—it has the largest kids club space in the entire Caribbean with programs ranging from tots to teens.

Located in the south-east Caribbean, safely out of the hurricane path that severely damaged nearby destinations, this island offers a mix of great beaches and family adventures, such as exploring caves, pirate ship cruises, and swimming with turtles. And don’t forget it’s one of the places you have to go in 2018, according to travel experts. Take advantage of great rates for air and hotel packages from Jet Blue, which offers nonstop flights from multiple East Coast cities. One property to consider that caters to families is Mango Bay Hotel which has one-bedroom apartments and activities including water-skiing, paddle boarding, kayaking, Hobiecat sailing, pedal-boating, and snorkeling for ages 4 and up. If you have teens, check out the Tamarind resort, which offers stand-up paddleboard lessons, teens-only shopping excursions, an island-inspired teen spa day, and even an aerial cinematography class!

South Walton, Florida

Floridadigidreamgrafix/ShutterstockThe sugar white sand beaches of South Walton, Florida offer plenty of kid-friendly activities, plus a healthy dose of adventure, culture, and beach relaxation that adults will love too. South Walton’s 16 beach neighborhoods are so picture perfect that they served as the backdrop for The Truman Show. The whole 26-mile stretch of beaches are magnificent, but Seaside and it’s surrounding beaches of Seagrove, Watercolor, and Grayton Beach are especially family friendly. Families looking for space to spread out can take advantage of more than 300 rentals available throughout the beach towns, including a number of large, multi-bedroom rentals that feature amenities ranging from pools to game rooms to outdoor kitchens.

As an extra draw, South Walton is in the process of developing an artificial reef, with four snorkeling reefs just off the coast of Grayton Beach, and nine scuba reefs further out to sea. The town is opening The Underwater Museum of Art, North America’s first underwater permanent sculpture park in 2018.

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

With a pedestrian-friendly downtown with plenty of inexpensive spots to eat, drink, and shop, this tourist-friendly town about an hour south of Cancun is a great fit for families who like to explore outside a resort, but still want to have hotel amenities nearby. For a local day trip, the ruins of Tulum are just 30 minutes away, where you can cool off with a free dip in the warm Caribbean sea below the ancient citadel (always a kid pleaser), and don’t miss the frozen paletas (ice pops) from vendors in flavors from avocado to watermelon, for about a buck.

Anaheim, California

Anaheim-disney-worldJames Kirkikis/Shutterstock M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E! Yes, Anaheim is where you’ll find America’s favorite mouse, but the sunny SoCal destination also offers warm weather and a great base to explore the rest of the southern West Coast’s family-friendly activities. And here are 14 ways to save serious money on your trip to the magical kingdom.

US News & World Report just ranked Anaheim #2 in Best Winter Family Vacation Destinations for its access to theme parks and attractions, including Disneyland Park and Disney’s California Adventure, Knott’s Berry Farm in nearby Buena Park, Legoland in Carlsbad and the San Diego Zoo in San Diego, and Universal Studios and much more in Los Angeles.

Hotels here offer affordable hotel packages to get travelers to stay in Anaheim as their Southern California base; for example, the Anaheim Marriott offers a Winter Savings Package that includes a deluxe guest room, Anaheim Resort Transit Day Passes, Kids Eat Free, and complimentary in-room Internet access and self-parking all for starting at $139 per room, per night.

CuracaoGail Johnson/Shutterstock

One of the most affordable islands in the Caribbean, Dutch Curaçao is a favorite respite from the damp and cold of Holland. And since visitors from Europe usually stay for one or two weeks, you’ll find lots of affordable family apartment and condo rentals on the island. The island is a secret favorite veteran travelers. Flights from most major North American hubs (including Miami, New York, and Toronto) are under $500, another selling point. Sunscape Curaçao is an all-inclusive resort with affordable prices for families. If you’re staying in a condo or apartment, the island recently launched an all-inclusive dine-around plan, where travelers have the opportunity to taste signature Curaçaoan dishes and try multiple restaurants for a fixed rate anywhere on the island, making it easy for families working with a budget to plan ahead for meal costs.

Phoenix, Arizona

With a new aquarium (the largest in the Southwest), spring-training baseball, a zoo, and hotels with pools everywhere you look, “America’s Sunniest Metropolis” is a great family destination. Phoenix offers desert temperatures, rugged mountain scenery, and plenty to keep the whole family busy. It also happens to be one of the 15 healthiest cities in the country. Since it’s America’s sixth largest city, you’ll find plenty of direct flights here from around the country plus a full offering of inexpensive chain properties to stay at (the kind that kids—and parents, too—love for their free breakfasts, playgrounds, and pools). Outdoor adventures include hiking and biking, exploring the desert with Red Jeep Tours, and golf and tennis—just to name a few of the many warm-weather diversions on offer.

BelizeMartina Genis/shutterstock This Central American nation on the blue Caribbean Sea offers incredible adventures (whale shark swimming anyone?), no jet lag, and numerous direct flights. From Belize City, you can be on your way to the deep blue waters off Ambergris Caye or Placencia or a luxury eco-lodge deep in Maya Mountains in under an hour. In fact, with seven or eight nights, you can easily combine the beach and the rainforest jungle in one trip!

Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Florida

FloridaWilliam Silver/shutterstock

For free activities that kids love, this Florida destination can’t be beat: Dubbed the “shelling capitals of the world,” Sanibel and Captiva Islands have long been known as meccas for shell collectors. Thanks to the destination’s geography and the east-west orientation of the water, the waves catch incoming shells of all shapes, varieties, and colors. They arrive daily by the hundreds of thousands, many of them fully intact. For kids, it’s like trick-or-treat on the beach; for parents, it’s a free and safe activity that comes with built-in complimentary souvenirs. And of course, there’s the warm surf and sea location, and easy to reach location.

Pelajar beli dadah guna aplikasi WhatsApp, WeChat

Summer Destinations That Are Surprisingly Gorgeous in the Winter

Montauk, New York

Summer-Destinations-that-Are-Surprisingly-Gorgeous-in-the-WinterCourtesy Gurneys Montauk

Montauk may lure summer travelers with its sandy shores, surf spots, and resorts (it’s one of the top 10 perfect places to escape with your besties), but winter brings something even rarer—serenity. The roads, overrun with cars in summer, are clear and easy to navigate, making for a quick drive to year-round sites such as Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum or Deep Hollow Ranch. Plus, a handful of restaurants and resorts stay open for business despite the cold. Gurney’s Montauk turns up the heat with seasonal spa treatments, a Finnish-style rock sauna, a Russian steam room, and an array of wellness programming—all with a beautiful, snowy backdrop!

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Summer-Destinations-that-Are-Surprisingly-Gorgeous-in-the-WinterCourtesy The Nantucket Hotel Once the world’s top whaling port, modern-day Nantucket retains much of its classic charm—sweeping beaches, sand dunes, historic harbors, and seaside cottages. After the crowds have emptied out, this 50-square mile island feels totally and utterly peaceful. Plus, off-peak prices at some of the island’s hottest properties mean you can experience New England luxury for a fraction of the cost. Winter rates at the famed Jared Coffin House—a stately brick mansion, once home to a prominent whaling merchant—start at $175. And you can stay at The Nantucket Hotel for $195 (compared to $625 in the summer). Plus, there’s cocktail hour in the outdoor hot tub and fondue by the fire pits. Craving more waterfront adventure? Here are 12 awesome island vacations you can take without leaving the country.

Newport, Rhode Island

Famed for its yacht-filled harbor and Gilded Age mansions, Newport has long been the summer locale of choice for New England’s elite. And while that certainly remains true, these days many people are making this coastal community their primary residence. The opening of Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina—with its do-it-yourself hot chocolate bar, mixology classes, and fire pits—further solidified it as a year-round destination. This Rhode Island gem sparkles during the winter. When Jack Frost comes to town, everything—from the cobblestone streets to the historic homes that line Bellevue Avenue—is cloaked in fluffy flakes, making it even more magical. Of course, no trip to Newport is complete with a drink at the White Horse Tavern, said to be the oldest bar in America.

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Summer-Destinations-that-Are-Surprisingly-Gorgeous-in-the-Wintermelissamn/Shutterstock Situated seven miles off Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is one of the best beach vacation in the U.S., but what you might not realize is that it’s home to 15,000 full-time residents and ferries from Woods Hole run every day (weather permitting), which means this idyllic island doesn’t shut down in the winter, but it does mellow considerably. And for solitude-seekers, that’s even more of a reason to visit. Adding to its off-season allure are reduced hotel rates, easy-to-secure restaurant reservations, and the promise of skating Uncle Seth’s Pond in West Tisbury.

Cape May, New Jersey

Summer-Destinations-that-Are-Surprisingly-Gorgeous-in-the-Wintercourtesy Cape Resorts

The Jersey Shore is popular summer destination—and a bucket-list stop for New Jersey—here are the top destinations for all 50 states. Cape May’s family-friendly fun has plenty to appeal to visitors year round. And the holidays are particularly picturesque. Snow-dusted Victorian homes dressed with yuletide decorations invite visitors to step back in time. And there’s even more festive fun to be had at Congress Hall. “America’s oldest seaside resort” evokes the spirit of Kris Kringle with a holiday shopping village, seasonal concert series, and even a carousel. The quieter months of January and February are great for relaxing and wallet-friendly getaways as many hotels offer specials. Topping the list is The Virginia, which has a “winter warm-up” package that includes a dining/cocktail credit and a discount on spa services.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Summer-Destinations-that-Are-Surprisingly-Gorgeous-in-the-WinterDmZ/ShutterstockCape Cod has much to offer to those willing to visit outside of the summer months. Come winter, you’ll find many unexpected pleasures like frosty beach walks, cultural attractions, minimal crowds, and tasty treats. Gallery hopping in Provincetown is always a hit. Or, bundle up and hit the trails at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary or the Salt Pond Visitor Center. Afterwards, warm up (and satisfy your sweet tooth) with a cup of cocoa at The Hot Chocolate Sparrow, Hole-In-One Doughnuts, or Pie in the Sky Bakery. For something a little stronger, stop by Cape Cod Beer or Devil’s Purse Brewery. And if the weather is crummy, why not expand your mind with a trip to the Cahoon Museum of American Art or the Woods Hole Science Aquarium? Speaking of animals, these photos prove there’s nothing better than being a dog on Cape Cod.

A retired GOF personnel joins Rela to help look after safety in Tanjung Labian

MO,13/2/2018, LAHAD DATU: Abd Rahim KK Hain has not stopped playing a role in safeguarding his community, after retiring from the police force. Having served as a General Operation Force personnel during Op Daulat five years ago, the retired corporal had since 2014 joined the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela). Rahim, 62, believes he still has what it takes to protect the people of Tanjung Labian, a coastal stretch made up of 10 villages.

Back then Rahim was attached to the GOF 17th Battalion when followers of the self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu Jamalul Kiram III entered isolated Kampung Tanduo within the Felda Sahabat estate in February 2013 to stake claim over Sabah. He now leads a group of Rela members, who are attached to the corps’s Community Service Centre (PKK) at Tanjung Labian, which saw the fiercest gun battle between the security forces and the intruders.

“In Op Daulat, I was deployed at the Tanjung Labian post to tighten security control at the village when security forces began mopping-up operations at Kampung Tanduo from Mar 5. “I remember the following day, we were instructed to be prepared as there were presence of Kiram fighters in Tanjung Batu and I was told by villagers the armed group leader Agbimuddin Kiram was looking for me after knowing I was a policeman ,” he told Harian Metro.

Rahim, who hails from Tanjung Labian, said he never once feared the Sulu fighters and was ready to sacrifice his life to protect the country from terrorists. “Although I have retired from the police force in 2014, I still want to continue fighting in protecting the safety and security particularly in Tanjung Labian,” he stressed.

The Tanjung Labian Rela outpost was formed as a result of discussion with Labian Zone Community Chief Asafal Alian. The centre was set up at the entrance junction to Tanjung Batu to assist security forces on patrol duty. Abd Rahim noted the security in Tanjung Labian and Tanjung Batu is now at the highest level and villagers can carry out their daily lives as usual.

Fitness Motivation Secrets That Actually Work

The sky’s the limit as long—as you focus on one step at a time

Fitness-Motivation-SecretsCourtesy RJ Kayser As a teenager, RJ Kayser would sit for hours on the couch binging on TV and chips. Then Kayser discovered a passion for basketball and decided to train to make the high school team. Not only did he change his body, his love for fitness led him to train for Canada’s Natural Strongest Man competition. He placed eighth, and is now a coach for Olorin Nutrition. “Snowball small successes into bigger victories. Write down small tasks to complete daily, or plan your goal out for however many days per week you can handle to start out. Cross your daily mini-goal off when you’ve completed it and give yourself a win for the day: actually write a big W on the page or in the app,” he says. “Psychologically, these wins will build momentum and confidence in your self and as the mini-goals become easier for you to complete you can increase the challenge or add a second goal to cross off each day.”

If you want to drop some pounds, try these no-brainer 40 tips and tricks.

Think about your relationship with fitness like you would a marriage

Fitness-Motivation-SecretsCourtesy Brian Shell

After losing weight once as a teen, author Brian Shell found himself overweight again as an adult. After walking away from his successful engineering career, he discovered a love of writing and a new sense of hope that helped him get into better shape—and stay there. The approach that worked best for Shell was treating fitness like you would a romantic relationship: Every little bit of effort adds up. “Park farther away because every step counts on your inner pedometer,” Shell says. “Take the stairs—it really does improve your breathing and cardio. Carry your bags instead of pushing a cart. As a result of making daily mundane activities harder, you get stronger, so does the marriage to your own fitness. Nurture the relationship to make it better. That’s a good thing, and the smile in the mirror is earned,” he says.

Keep the self-talk positive

Fitness-Motivation-SecretsCourtesy James P. Owen

Quick: What went through your head the last time you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror? For most people, paying oneself compliments is tough. But it was positive mantras that made all the difference for author James P. Owen. A video from his 70th birthday presented a wakeup call. After watching himself move like an infirm old man, he began working with a trainer to develop strength and cardio endurance through walking, yoga, Pilates, and more. Owen says his mindset was everything: “I’ve learned that the most challenging part of getting fit is mental, not physical, and that’s doubly true if you’re over 50. Banish any idea that you are too weak, too old, or too unmotivated to get fit, and stop beating yourself up over past failures,” he says. “Instead, think of the stronger, more limber person you want to become—and will become if you stick with it and make small, steady advances over time.”

Don’t compare yourself to others

Fitness-Motivation-SecretsCourtesy Lotika Pai Six years ago, Lotika Pai had a lot on her plate as a new mom and an investment banker. Then a friend suggested running, inspiring her to sign up for a beginner’s program. “Running in a group provided me with a structure to get started, people to hold me accountable for showing up to our group run sessions, and gave me a specific plan for other individual workouts to tackle during the week. I was hooked,” she shared. Now, logging miles is a critical part of her life; it also helps her cope with her chronic illnesses (insulin resistance and polycystic ovarian syndrome). She also has built a new career that allows her to spend time with her family. “For a long time I allowed myself to be intimidated by the people working out around me,” she says “You can’t compare your day one or even your day 50 to someone else’s day 365. When it comes to fitness, no body shape is better than another. Just as no workout is better than another. What is important is actually doing something,” she says. “I learned to define my own individual fitness journey through running. I run slowly and I run short distances, but I get up, get out, keep getting stronger and I love it.”

Ease into your fitness routine

Fitness-Motivation-SecretsCourtesy Chidere N. Igwe

At the start of 2017, publicist Chidere Igwe watched a YouTube video of herself in which she weighed 220 pounds—the heaviest she had ever been. She put a fitness plan into action and lost 30 pounds over the year, a journey that sparked another transformation—starting up her own business at the end of the year. But no change can happen overnight, says Igwe, and as a former athlete, she knows how important it is to ease into a fitness routine. “Your first workout should not be a 30-minute sprint on a treadmill, 100 reps of bodyweight workout, or killing yourself for two hours straight. This is what makes people give up so quick,” she says. “If I haven’t been focused on my fitness goals, my first workout back in the gym will be a 15-minute jog, 20 reps of bodyweight exercises, and probably an hour long, max. Slow and steady wins the race, and building will bring more success and fewer plateaus.” Here are 25 simple tips for easing back into a workout.

Find a workout you actually enjoy

Fitness-Motivation-SecretsCourtesy Mike “FatDag” DaggettBefore travel blogger and photographer Laurence Norah started traveling full-time in 2009, he was a committed couch potato. Fun was beer with friends, pizza, and hours of playing video games. This gluttonous and sedentary routine took its toll; by 2009, he found himself just shy of 200 pounds. Putting his passport to work not only opened up his eyes to a new worldview, but changed his attitude toward fitness. While living in Australia for a year, Norah would wake up to hike 20 miles per day. In an effort to save money, he spent more time cooking. Norah ended up dropping 60 pounds that year. These days, he’s holding steady at 155 pounds and feels healthier—and happier!—than ever before. But the key to his success was all in redefining the word “fun.” If you don’t like what you’re doing, Norah says, you’ll never continue to maintain momentum. “I discovered a real passion for hiking, and I really love to get out and explore the world now. Learning how to cook healthy food is also a really valid life skill—and one that can benefit friends and family as well as yourself,” he says. “It’s super important not to see fitness as a punishment but as a lifestyle change like this comes about as a result of seeing it as a positive thing.” If you feel like you don’t have time to prepare meals at home, learn the secrets of busy parents who manage to cook dinner every night.

Make long-term goals, not short-term performance ones

Fitness-Motivation-SecretsCourtesy Laurence Norah

Mike Daggett would aimlessly scroll through his 200 channels, searching for something to watch but kept coming up empty. In an effort to live deliberately, he shut off his service and switched to streaming services instead. This allowed him to cut back on his couch time, and he filled the gap with fitness. He approaches this lifestyle with a balanced mindset, giving himself rest when he needs it, and celebrating his efforts when he pushes himself hard. “Rather than pushing so hard that you need to rest for two weeks, do as little as possible, so you can repeat it daily,” he says. “Your body will tell you when it’s time to up the activity. You must build the habit of attendance and you can’t do that from the couch. At the end of a year, you’ll have better results by walking 3,000 steps every day, than walking 10,000 steps for a few weeks and then heading back to the couch from March on.”

Dedicate your training to someone you love

Fitness-Motivation-SecretsCourtesy Katy RoseTwo years ago, blogger Katy Rose’s sister was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease scleroderma, which prevented her from participating endurance sports. She asked her family to run one last race—the Chicago Marathon—with her, before she packed up her shoes. Because Rose hadn’t trained in years, she knew she needed to kick herself into high gear to prepare and fulfill her sister’s wish. Rose managed to pull it off, and she continues to maintain her fitness with a variety of workouts and routines from the audio app, Aaptiv. What pushed her the most was seeing her sister struggle and fight against this little-known disease. For those who want to get into better shape, she says choosing a race or a goal that benefits someone you love will help you stay the course. “I’m not doing it to lose weight or to drop a dress size, although those will be nice side effects. I’m doing it for my sister and I’m doing it to fight a disease that has no cure and very few treatments. It’s a lot easier to push and stick to it when you are doing it for someone else,” she says. Dipaksa minum air menggelegak | Merdeka Online
