Durian runtuh untuk warga FELDA Jengka

JENGKA 2 APRIL 2018. Antara yang hadir ketika program Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Razak beramah mesra bersama warga peneroka FELDA dalam DUN Jengka di Padang Awam Felda Jengka 11. NSTP/ SAIRIEN NAFIS

‘Rafizi’s Tabung Haji claims an example of why we need fake news law’

IRMOHIZAM IBRAHIM / BUAL BICARA ISU TANAH IJOK

MO,2/4/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli’s defamatory statements against Tabung Haji two years ago, is solid evidence of why Malaysia needs laws to punish people who create and spread fake news. Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim said, the claims by Rafizi had sparked panic among the people and even affected a number of TH depositors. He said, if the Anti-Fake News Bill 2018 is not passed, similar incidents could occur in the future, thus bringing a negative impact on the people and jeopardise the nation’s stability.

Irmohizam cited an article titled ‘Analisa Kewangan Tabung Haji 2009- 2015’ (Tabung Haji Financial Analysis 2009-2015) published on a Facebook account belonging to the Pandan MP in 2016, and said it caused panic and led to a loss of confidence in TH. “It led to 3,954 TH depositors, including people in my constituency, closing down their accounts. “This also led to 3,105 people losing their qualification to perform the haj, as well as losing out their turn to undergo the pilgrimage.

“TH withdrawal activities also saw huge increase with RM41 million on Feb 10 (a day after the article was published), RM49.8 million (Feb 11), RM27.9 million (Feb 12), compared to RM8 million on Feb 9 (a day before the article was published). However, he himself (referring to Rafizi) did not close down his TH account. His savings stood at RM464,000 with a dividend of RM37,15 from TH,” he said while debating the Anti Fake News Bill at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Irmohizam said as the spread of fake news and culture of citizen journalism rises, the implementation of proper legislation could help curb the problem. “Fake news problem is not something to be taken lightly as it could be critical when certain people use it in order to achieve certain goals. “It becomes more difficult when we take into the account the culture of citizen journalism, where some people immediately share any news they received without checking its authenticity.

“The advancement of smart phones have also made the spread of fake news easier. “Therefore, there is a need for the Bill to be passed as soon as possible in order to safeguard the peace and harmony in the country,” he said, adding that he believed those who were against the move to implement the Bill were the very ones spreading fake news.

During the debate, Irmohizam also took a swipe at Gombak Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, whom he claimed had accused him on commenting on the Ijok land scandal at the behest of Tan Sri Noh Omar, who is Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister. “The Tanjung Karang MP (Noh) never asked me to do so, but it was based on my own initiative as the Kuala Selangor MP, who is fighting for the rights of the people and in my constituency.”

Would a bankrupt govt be able to build houses for the poor, asks Zahid

AHMAD ZAHID HAMIDI DI PROGRAM BANTU RAKYAT LENGGONG

MO,2/4/2018, LENGGONG: If the government truly is bankrupt, it would not be able to build houses for low-income earners and sell them at low prices despite the high cost of construction, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He labeled those who accuse the government of bankruptcy as having “bankrupt minds” themselves.

“We do not want to talk about others, we also do not want to talk bad about others. We tell people what we have done before, what we are doing now and what we will do in the future,” he said, in reference to the government’s achievements to date.

Zahid was speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Housing Project for the Hardcore Poor (PPRT) in Kampung Chain here today. Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Lenggong member of parliament Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.

Zahid said the PPRT project, worth RM94 million, will see 500 houses built. The cost of building each house is RM194,000 but it will be sold at only RM35,000. The project comes equipped with surau, community hall, children’s nursery, and shop lots. “No developer would build a house costing RM194,000 and later sell them at RM35,000 each. None.

“Only a government which is not bankrupt is able to do so,” he said. A total of 500 units measuring 700sq ft each will be built in Kampung Chain. Five units will cater specifically to the disabled, with these units measuring 710 sq ft, equipped with three bedrooms, two washrooms, a kitchen, a porch and a backyard. Zahid said the PPRT programme was part of the government’s manifesto to provide housing for the people. This, he said, isn’t a political agenda but one made with the people in mind.

The government, he said, priorities the rakyat without taking into account their political affiliation, race or religion. Zahid also called out the opposition for their labeling of government aid as ‘dedak’ (animal feed). On the 1Malaysia People’s Aid 4.0 (BR1M) distribution last year, Zahid said there were 684,588 recipients in Perak which covered more than half a million of people in the state who were eligible to receive the aid.

“Is this RM650 million ‘dedak’ (animal feed)? Don’t insult the people by labeling these as ‘dedak’. “In the Lenggong parliamentary constituency, 11,631 people received assistance worth RM10.5 million. Is this also ‘dedak’? Don’t insult the people of Lenggong, don’t insult the people of Perak, and don’t insult Malaysians who receive BR1M because we are the people who thank the government for providing BR1M,” he said.

Zahid later announced the approval of several allocations for projects in Lenggong and Gerik. These included RM1 million for expanding classrooms of the Maahad Tahfiz in Air Jernih, Grik; a futsal court for Kampung Gua Badak (RM168,000); upgrading the Tasik Raban Rest House and Resort (RM500,000), upgrading Dataran Tasik Raban (RM500,000) and upgrading Dataran Lenggong (RM400,000).

PM: Felda success due to BN’s continued hard work

FELDA-PM

MO,2/4/2018, BERA: Felda’s success is due to the continued commitment demonstrated by the Barisan Nasional government and its leaders, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today. He said the government has clear policies which focused on bringing improvement to Felda settlers and most of the settlers today have undergone transformation. Najib said there were several countries including some from Africa that had tried to emulate the country’s move (to establish a scheme like Felda).

“Many countries including from Africa sent delegations here, the leaders wanted to adopt our model in their country. They wanted to replicate the resettlement scheme. “However, none of the countries managed to do what we have done and this could be due to various factors which I do not wish to elaborate. The Felda success story here is due to the commitment shown by the leadership starting from the second prime minister (Tun) Abdul Razak Hussein in Felda Lurah Bilut in 1956,” he said in his speech before launching the Felda second generation housing lot models at Felda Kumai here today.

He said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had wanted to privatise Felda but the then chairman did not agree to the move so Dr Mahathir’s plans did not materialise.

“When he (Dr Mahathir) could not privatise Felda, he froze Felda until there were no more additional settlements when he was in power. That is the difference between Tun Dr Mahathir and Tun Abdul Razak in displaying their commitment towards assisting the rural community. “Today, he (Dr Mahathir) wants to be the prime minister, and what will then be the fate of Felda settlers? Just as I had mentioned previously, if he becomes prime minister, he will cancel all the agreements with China including the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) which is a game changer for the east coast,” he said.

Najib said Felda settlers could suffer a drop in income if China retaliates by deciding to stop buying oil palm. “There will be bad implications and who will be affected? Not Tun Mahathir but Felda settlers will suffer.” He said BN has brought many changes and transformed the lives of settlers over the years. “BN will always safeguard the wellbeing of the people living in rural areas along with other races in the country,” he said.

Speaking on the new second generation housing project, he said 5,000 new model units will be built under the first phase nationwide including 3,000 units in Pahang which involves 900 lots at 14 Felda settlements in Bera at a cost of RM164 million. Also present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, Bera member of parliament Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, and Felda chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad.

Pakatan plan to review mega projects could harm Malaysia – China ties

NEWS

MO,2/4/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) plan to review and possibly cancel mega projects executed with Chinese companies, if the opposition come into power, will only jeopardise Malaysia’s relationship with the world economic superpower. International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapha Mohamed said such plans, laid out in PH’s manifesto, would also affect the country’s palm oil and rubber industries and subsequently Felda settlers who were directly involved in the commodities.

He said unlike PH, Barisan Nasional (BN) has been committed to a continued cooperation with China, given the benefits it stands to gain in the long term. “We are concerned over PH’s manifesto, which intends to review all projects with China. “This would mean reviewing the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, Kuantan Port project, solar energy projects in Melaka and Penang, as well as projects in Sarawak, which would affect our relationship with China.

“This will affect the country’s palm oil and rubber industries as well as Felda settlers,” he said in a reply to Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjong Piai), in the Dewan Rakyat today. Wee had asked whether the ministry would do an analysis of the country’s interest in China’s ‘One Belt One Road (OBOR)’ initiative, The opposition pact had recently announced that it would review all contracts signed with foreign companies, especially contracts involving the country’s strategic assets, should PH win the 14th General Election.

Meanwhile, Mustapha said Malaysia has become a strong supporter of the OBOR initiative as China is the world’s second largest economy after the United States and had recorded the highest economic growth in 20 years. “China has a large e-commerce companies like Huawei, which has set up its operations centre in Malaysia to cater for 100 companies with regards to marketing and technical support.

“China is also Malaysia’s 11th largest trading partner, which saw an expansion by 20.6 per cent last year, while our exports to China also increased by 28 per cent.”
