Ramli Ibrahim gets his Padma award, one of India’s highest civilian honours

RAMLI

MO,3/4/2018, NEW DELHI: Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, Malaysia’s legendary choreographer and Indian classical dancer, received India’s Padma Shri award, one of the country’s top civilian honours, in New Delhi on Monday evening. Attired in a black baju melayu and a songkok, Ramli received the award from President Ram Nath Kovind at the Presidential Palace. The award acknowledges 65-year-old Ramli’s 40-year career as a classical Oddisi dancer and trainer, his Bharatanatyam performances, and the setting up of Sutra Dance Theatre in Malaysia.

“The award is a boost to Sutra Foundation. There will be the responsibility of rising up to the expectation of people who think that this award brings automatic success. “I hope the award will help to foster more bilateral cultural links between Malaysia and India,” Ramli told Bernama. “What is even more important is that our initiatives are not motivated by political or economic agendas but for the love of Indian arts,” he added.

Ramli, who presented his new Odissi production Ganjam in Uttar Pradesh state’s capital Lucknow on Sunday (April 1) evening as part of a cultural tour, flew to New Delhi to receive the Padma Shri award. Those who attended the awards ceremony included India’s Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and many federal ministers. The fourth highest civilian honour in India, Padma Shri is given every year to people for their distinguished services in various fields such as arts, public affairs and sports.

As a special gesture to mark the silver jubilee of India-Asean relationship, the Indian government announced on Jan 25 that this year’s awards will also have 10 recipients from South-East Asia. Ramli has choreographed stunning shows and nurtured dance talents from Malaysia. Accomplished in ballet, modern, and Indian classical dance, he was awarded India’s prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2011.

Ramli said one of the tough areas at the moment is to get “sustainable funding for our artistic and cultural activities” and he hopes the new Indian recognition will help his work. “Definitely, work will continue as usual but I hope our obstacles will be lessened through this recognition,” he said.

Opposition’s plans to cancel China contracts ‘crazy and irrational’, says PM

MO,3/4/2018, MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has described the opposition’s plans to cancel several contracts with Chinese companies as “crazy and irrational.” He said this is because China is one of Malaysia’s largest trading partners and buyers of various Malaysian products such as palm oil, bird’s nest and electronics. He added that this would only be a loss for Malaysia and would make the people suffer.

“We have heard from the opposition about their plans to cancel several contracts with Chinese companies like the East Coast Rail Link project.

“Just imagine, China is a large trading nation, which means that Malaysia has a trading partner with a trade value of over RM100 billion,” said Najib. The prime minister said China is also the largest consumer of palm oil as well as a buyer of Malaysian timber products, furniture, bird’s nest, electronic products and even Musang King durian. “Now, imagine if we were to damage our bilateral relationship with China. If China does not buy our palm oil or furniture, who would lose? It’s the people who would lose, not the opposition leaders,” said Najib.

The prime minister was speaking at the opening of the Muar Furniture Park in Bakri here. Also present were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong. At the event, Najib declared Muar as the ‘Furniture City of Malaysia’.

He said the opposition’s plans would only have a negative effect on the people. “It is just like what Khaled said earlier, the other side (the opposition) is a chaotic bunch (pihak haru biru). The move to cancel all our cooperation with China is a crazy and insane move.

” Just because of politics, they want to do something irrational which would only affect the people.”However, the existing government will continue to fight for the everybody, including the people here in Muar,” said Najib.

Segamat to become new growth area under ECER

SEGAMAT-PM

MO,3/4/2018, SEGAMAT: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today announced Segamat as the new growth area to be parked under the East Coast Economic Region (ECER). The prime minister said he could see the potential in developing Segamat, which shares its border with Mersing and Rompin. “Segamat has ties with Mersing and Rompin. I know Felda settlers in these two districts will come to Segamat to do their shopping.

“On my way here, I have been told of how great it would be to include Segamat in the ECER. “In this respect, the government wants to develop this district by putting it under ECER as a new growth area together with others in the same economic corridor,” he said. Najib was speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony of the 197 kilometre electrified double-tracking rail project, before a crowd of more than 3,000 people.

The prime minister also relayed another piece of good news for the people of Segamat, by announcing the upcoming development of the Segamat Inland Port logistic hub via ECER at a cost of RM20 million. “This project will open a new chapter for Segamat,” he said to loud applause from the floor. Najib said, based on these two announcements, the people of Segamat have reasons to feel elated.

Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said he had “good vibes” when he reached the ETS launch site. “There were those who refused to let go of my hand just now and hopefully, this is a good sign that Segamat will remain under Barisan Nasional (in the 14th General Election),” he said. Segamat member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramanian said he looked forward to the vibrant economic activities that the locals stood to gain.

“This can stem the migration of youths in Segamat, who are seeking opportunities elsewhere,” he said.
