Things the Internet Told Us That Are Just Not True

Dis-tressed

Spider garden-spider (lat. Araneus) kind araneomorph spiders of the family of Orb-web spiders (Araneidae) on webGarmasheva Natalia/ShutterstockThis story predates the Internet. It started in the 1950s but persists to this day, thanks, in part, to people continuing to post decade-appropriate variations on the Internet. The original goes like this: A woman who wore a huge bouffant never took it down, combed it out, or washed it. One day, a spider fell into her hair, took up residence, and hatched a baby spider, which bit her… fatally. The thing is, it wasn’t true then, nor in the ’60s (when the woman wore her hair long and unkempt), nor in the ’90s (when she wore dreadlocks), nor now. Nor ever. Neither were these celebrity death hoaxes that spread on the Internet (and that you probably fell for).

Bubble-vicious

Pink Bubble Gum Background that can be used to provide your messagekaren roach/Shutterstock

If you were a kid in the 1970s, you might remember your first piece of Bubble Yum. So sweet! So soft! So… full of spider eggs?! What?! In some weird form of bubblegum backlash, rumors abounded that Bubble Yum was made from spider eggs, spider legs, or spider webs (depending on the source). It wasn’t true, and the company spent over $100,000 battling the rumor, which is still circulated to this day, thanks to repeated postings on the Internet.

Cadbury the hatchet

BARBARA WALTON/Shutterstock

In a current version of the “so good it has to be fatal” candy trope, a rumor began circulating earlier this year that a Cadbury employee had been arrested for “adding his HIV-infected blood” to the company’s products. But this is pure fiction. HIV doesn’t survive long enough outside its host medium of human bodily fluids to pose a risk, even if an employee were to have done something so awful. And there’s no record of any such thing, nor of any such arrest. P.S. It also wasn’t true when the product in question was Pepsi or, for that matter, Mango Frooti. Don’t miss these 17 scientific “facts” that are actually not true.

Chocolate milk’s dark udder-belly

Refreshing Delicious Chocolate Milk with Real CocoaBrent Hofacker/Shutterstock

How does chocolate milk get to be brown? Some Internet postings claim that chocolate milk is made with cow’s milk that was rejected as regular milk because it contains cow’s blood. However, those postings are hogwash. Chocolate milk is brown because of chocolate, and, no, it doesn’t come exclusively from brown cows either.

Twink everlasting

Lenscap Photography/Shutterstock

Whatever you may have heard on the Internet, Twinkies do not last forever. Their shelf life is 25 days. While that in itself is pretty remarkable for a baked good, let’s not get ahead of ourselves: it’s not even a month, let alone the rumored seven years. Or 25. Or 100. Or indefinitely. Just, no. Make sure you know the truth about these 21 other food myths that have been debunked.

Sleep, baby, sleep

Portrait Of Happy Baby Girl Playing In Nursery CotMonkey Business Images/Shutterstock

“If only,” some parents might say about the Internet rumor that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a tranquilizer dart gun designed to put children to sleep. But alas, it is just an Internet rumor (and a pretty darn silly one at that).

Facebook’s echo chamber algorithm

Bloomicon/Shutterstock

Tired of opening Facebook only to see posts from the same boring friends? Well, stop blaming Facebook because those Internet rumors that a Facebook algorithm only shows you posts from about two dozen friends in your newsfeed aren’t true—and won’t be, no matter how many times you repost it or post emojis or “hi” stickers on other people’s repostings of it. Oh, and in case you think your stock certificates got lost in the mail, Facebook never promised to gift you with shares of its stock just because you posted a message congratulating Zuckerberg on the birth of his baby.

Forward THIS

Man reading email on tablet. All content is made up.Kaspars Grinvalds/Shutterstock

You know those social media posts/text messages that tell you to “forward this message to help fund medical care” for a boy who was shot by his stepfather, a boy with the massive, disfiguring tumor, a baby born with his heart outside his body, or a variety of other children depicted in gruesome photos? Sorry. There’s not a shred of truth to them. As fact-checking website Snopes says, “if you want to make a difference in a sick child’s life, the best way is still the old-fashioned one: donate your money or your time, not a worthless text message.”

I reject your rejection

Back in 2015, college-bound high school seniors and their anxiety-ridden parents got a kick out of a Tumblr post by high school senior, Siobhan O’Dell, who had been denied admission by Duke University. In the post, O’Dell rejected Duke’s rejection of her, and apparently, Duke responded by rejecting her rejection of its rejection of her. The truth is, O’Dell didn’t send the letter to Duke. She didn’t even write it. In fact, her letter was drafted from a template that’s been circulating the Internet for at least 20 years now.

Flu shots cause the flu

Hand holding syringe and vaccine.Billion Photos/Shutterstock

Heard the one about the deadly flu epidemic caused by a flu shot that contained live flu virus? Well, we sincerely hope it didn’t keep you from getting your flu shot this year—because it’s false. While it’s true the current flu season has been the worst in years, and this season’s vaccine wasn’t as effective as vaccines from other seasons, the flu vaccine contains no live flu virus and is safe for most people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Read on for 55 more rampant health myths that need to die.

Root canals cause cancer

Dentist inspecting a child's teethAdrian Hughes/Shutterstock
Root canals aren’t exactly pleasant, and maybe you’d like an excuse to skip it if your dentist ever suggests you get one. But do they cause terminal cancer, as the Internet rumor goes? No, no they do not. In fact, healthy teeth and gums are associated with better health, and research has shown that people who undergo multiple root canals and similar endodontic treatments have a reduced risk of cancer.

Cancer cures straight from the garden

Dandelion roots with leaves on a wooden cutting boardMadeleine Steinbach/Shutterstock

If only it were true that dandelion root could cure cancer. But those Internet claims that it kills 98 percent of cancer cells within 48 hours are simply not true. Same goes for soursop (the fruit of the graviola tree), which is the subject of its own Internet cancer-cure-claims. Don’t miss these 50 myths about cancer that need to die.

Is Snopes actually a fake fake-news site?

via snopes.com

Regardless of whatever you might have heard, when it comes to fact-checking, Snopes.com (the source of clarification for many of the above fake Internet facts) has been found to be a reliable fact-checking source, according to fact-checking website, Factchecker.org, a non-profit project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. And while we’re at it, here are 51 more “facts” you’ve always believed that are false.

Craziest Airline Passenger Stories | Reader’s Digest

Naked guy testing the limits

Alex Malikov/ShutterstockOn a flight to Hong Kong, a flight attendant informed the pilot, Dan Boland, that a passenger had taken off all his clothes and was sitting buck naked in his seat. Boland instructed the flight attendant to tell the passenger he’d be arrested if he didn’t get dressed at once. The passenger called their bluff, waiting until landing to get dressed. Although he wasn’t arrested, we don’t suggest trying this yourselves.

Nice guys, but do we need to see that?

Boxer shortsEvikka/ShutterstockReddit contributor hubberbubber recalls a story his pilot father told him about the time he was flying an Australian rugby team back to Australia after a championship match. “They rented out the entirety of first class, and the moment the flight reached cruising altitude, stripped down to their boxers.” Apparently, they were some of the most polite passengers hubberbubber’s dad had ever seen—albeit almost naked.

An emotional support slippery slope

Miniature poodle in stand on white backgroundJagodka/ShutterstockA former pilot, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells Reader’s Digest of a passenger who brought his emotional support dog on the plane. So far, so good, right? The thing was, the emotional support dog, a sturdy German Shepherd, required his own emotional support dog: a fluffy toy poodle mix. This was, of course, unprecedented… and, therefore, permissible. Don’t miss these ridiculous requests people have actually made on airplanes

Emotional support… squirrel?

Eurasian red squirrel isolated on white background.Tsekhmister/ShutterstockSpeaking of animals on board, Reddit contributor jbOOgi3 heard from his grandfather, a flight attendant, that one time, a passenger was suspected of having an unauthorized pet in the cabin with him. When Grandpa went to investigate, the passenger was gently petting the small animal, which Grandpa assumed would be a teacup-sized Yorkie or kitten.

Nope. It was a squirrel.

A dubious back-story

ambulance stretcher white backgroundJavier Crespo/ShutterstockBoland, founder of the travel site Holidayers, recalls a passenger who refused to move his seat to the upright position before landing, claiming his back hurt. Although the passenger relented, he cried out in pain as his seat back went up and demanded an ambulance to help him disembark. After all the other passengers were gone, Boland and his crew watched the man being stretchered off the aircraft. Later on, the medics told Boland they suspected the man was attempting to pull an insurance scam.

Sleep-walking passenger

Asian middle age woman who gets tiredmiya227/Shutterstock

“About two hours into a flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, a passenger came up to a flight attendant in a complete panic because she’d left her husband behind in the airport in L.A.,” Boland tells Reader’s Digest. While the befuddled crew was checking the passenger manifest for the husband’s name, the passenger completely snapped out of her panic. Turned out she’d been sleepwalking. Her husband was right on the plane, thankfully, Boland adds, “because even if it had been true, we couldn’t have turned back for him.” You’ll also want to read these things flight attendants won’t tell you.

Cockpit-toilet confusion

Open toilet bowl isolated on white background. File contains a path to isolation.HomeArt/ShutterstockFirst-time fliers often have no idea where anything is located on the plane, Boland tells Reader’s Digest. Sometimes, when trying to locate the lavatory, they’ll knock on the cockpit door. “The funny part is that we have a camera with multiple angles in the forward galley and in front of the cockpit door that we can watch from the cockpit. So it’s always hilarious to watch them slowly figure out they were knocking on the wrong door instead of the toilet.”

Predictable drunk

Bottle of beer with drops isolated on white backgroundyingtustocker/ShutterstockReddit contributor Vrael22 is a ground agent for an airline where he observes first-hand the passengers that are most likely to cause trouble. “We can tell from the moment they check in at the counter if they are going to be an issue and are oftentimes not proven wrong.” In one such case, a passenger who was obviously drunk at the gate, was even drunker when boarding, and before the flight had even taken off, had peed himself in his seat. “We had to deplane him and he was about to have a go at my manager before he saw the port security casually saunter over.”

Where’s this guy been for the past 50 years?

Chicken breast sandwich isolated on whiteY_L/ShutterstockVrael22 also recalls a passenger who seemingly hadn’t flown since the 1970s (when food and beverage service was offered even on the shortest flights), because he asked for a sandwich and a root beer on his 45 minute commuter flight and became belligerent when he was told these items weren’t available on the short hop. In fact, the passenger insisted he was being lied to and threatened to sue the airline if he didn’t get his sandwich and root beer. It wasn’t a pleasant flight for anyone, but at least it was short.

The logical alternative to a cramped bathroom

Magazines isolated on whiteAfrica Studio/ShutterstockWhen passengers complained of a terrible odor emanating from somewhere near their seats, it turned out that a mom had instructed her son to “go number 2” on the carpet, rather than in the lavatory, and then attempted to conceal the mess with magazines and airsick bags. Turned out the mom felt her son “couldn’t relax” in the tiny airplane bathroom. In the end, the cabin crew had to clean up the mess with saw-dust (normally used for vomit clean-ups) and a full can of bathroom spray.

How you can tell your plane is flying on an angle

Airplane isolated on white backgroundphive/ShutterstockFormer flight attendant and current Reddit contributor runLikeYerBeingChasd recalls the time she had a school group of young children sitting in the front of the plane. On takeoff, one little boy leaned over into the aisle and threw up. The puke rolled and splashed down the aisle almost all the way to the back galley. Here are some more crazy-but-true stories from aviation professionals.

This couldn’t happen nowadays, could it?

MSSA/ShutterstockReddit contributor how_bout_knope‘s grandma was a flight attendant during the 1960s and ’70s, long before the TSA enacted strict rules about what you can and can’t bring on board an airplane. “About 40 years ago, she had a passenger carry on a large garment bag, which they later discovered had a dead body in it when it fell and partially unzipped.”

It wasn’t a murder victim, which was everyone’s first thought. It was a woman’s body being transported for her funeral. The family apparently was trying to save money by not shipping it in cargo.

While all of these stories are true, you definitely don’t want to fall for these airplane myths everyone should stop believing.

Company pays staff to go home and vote

MO,11/4/2018, KOTA KINABALU: A construction material company based in Shah Alam is giving its Sabahan and Sarawakian workers three days paid leave, complete with air ticket and allowance, to fly back and vote in the general election. Marble Emporium Sdn Bhd proprietor Sim Yen Peng, 43, said he was doing this as “voting is a responsibility”. He hoped that his gesture would spur other firms in the peninsula with such workers to do the same.

Sim, who is from Miri, said he was also driven by his own experience of not having enough money to fly back home for Chinese New Year or to vote. “If employers can spend on compulsory annual return tickets for their foreign workers, why can’t the same be done for our Sabahan and Sarawakian workers once every five years for the general election?” Sim said yesterday.

He said 11 of his workers from Sabah and Sarawak will get three days off from May 7 to May 9, free return air tickets and RM300 travel allowance each, with expenses coming up to about RM1,000 per worker. He posted the announcement on the company’s Facebook page yesterday, hours after the Election Commission fixed May 9 for polling.

The posting went viral, with people giving the thumbs up to the company which supplies natural marbles and granite across Malaysia.

Sim, who started the company eight years ago, said at the very least, companies should give workers living away from their polling centres RM100 and an extra day off to enable them to cast their ballots. “I have been encouraging my staff to register as voters for the past five years and pledged to help them go back to vote when it was time,” he added.

Many people praised the company for its initiative, with some even going as far as offering to purchase products from the company. Facebook user Mohamad Nasir wrote: “I’m now in the middle of renovating my house, may I know where I can buy your products?”

Vishnnu Rajahram contributed this post: “I know where I’m getting my marble next!” Another FB user Choon Hoe said the company’s actions should set an example for other firms in the country. “Really salute your company. You have set a very good example to many big firms out there.”
