16 Baris Tak sangka dibanjiri ribuan peminat Joe Flizzow mohon maaf

BACA: 16 Baris: Tempat persembahan tak mampu tampung limpahan peminat hip hop?

Kampung Baru to remain in Malay hands, pledges Johari

PROJEK BAITI JANNATI

MO,14/4/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: Ownership of land in Kampung Baru will remain in Malay hands, without disregarding the importance of development in the strategic area, says Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said development will continue to take place in Kampung Baru in stages to benefit the population. “As long as there is a moon and stars in the sky, the land ownership will remain in Malay hands. This has already been enshrined in the agreement, as the land was bestowed by the Sultan of Selangor around 18 years ago.

“There are many who do not understand issues related to Kampung Baru, and resort to accusing the government on not carrying out development in the area,” he said. Johari was speaking to reporters after ceremony to handover Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) Baiti Jannati project (Federal Territory-level) houses in Kampung Baru on Friday. Also present was A Sivanas, who is general manager of TNB’s Kuala Lumpur (customer support) Distribution division.

TNB’s Baiti Jannati project, which began in 2007, is part of its corporate social responsibility to repair the homes of the needy. As of 11 April, a total of 547 homes have been repaired nationwide, involving a cost of RM22.32 million. Johari said, the government has remained consistent in helping the people of Kampung Baru but face numerous challenges, including small lot sizes and ownership issues.

kgbaru134_1523621862

“Many lots in Kampung Baru are small in size, making it difficult to be developed in the context of modern development. “If there was an opportunity to merge the lots after obtaining the consent of the land owners, I am certain that even more developers would be interested in developing the area. “However, we will still continue our efforts to develop the area so it does not look like a ‘squatter area’, as claimed by some irresponsible quarters,” he said.

Johari, who is also Titiwangsa Member of Parliament, said the opposition need not politicise the development of Kampung Baru as they do not fully understand the problems affecting the area. “They (the opposition) only come here once every five years, and suddenly want to become the hero and teach us. “I’d like to teach them a thing or two as well. Kampung Baru is not a squatter area. If it was a squatter area, it could be easily developed. This land has history, with inheritance involved,” he said.

Sime Darby Plantation calls out major UK supermarket on palm oil ditch

61458285330_kelapasawit

MO,14/4/2018, KUALA LUMPUR -Sime Darby Plantation Bhd has lambasted a major UK supermarket chain’s decision to stop using palm oil, calling it “misguided” and “unrealistic”. Iceland Foods, which runs 900 stores across Britain, had announced on Monday that it will stop using palm oil in its own-brand products — which is said to account for more than half of its products — by the end of this year.

Iceland managing director Richard Walker justified the decision as ethical, citing palm oil as one of the world’s biggest causes of deforestation and threat to animal extinction.  “Until Iceland can guarantee palm oil is not causing rainforest destruction, we are simply saying ‘no to palm oil. We don’t believe there is such a thing as guaranteed ‘sustainable’ palm oil available in the mass market,” Walker reportedly said.

According to news reports, the company had spent £5 million (RM27.63 million) on the “Palm Oil Alarm Call” project so far.  Today, Sime Darby Plantation — the world’s largest oil palm plantation company, accounting for 20% of the world’s certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) production — issued a statement to express its disappointment over Iceland’s move. It explained that replacing palm oil with other vegetable oils will only impose more pressure on forests, as more land is needed to produce the same amount of oil.

“This is because the oil palm is a highly efficient oil crop and produces between four to 10 times more oil per unit of land, than other substitutes such as soybean, rapeseed or sunflower. “With projections on global population indicating a rapid rise that will fuel exponential increase in the demand for vegetable oils, a ban on palm oil should be seen as imprudent and unrealistic,” the statement explained. Sime Darby Plantation, which is a founding member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), gave an assurance it is committed to the “No-Deforestation, No-Peat and No-Exploitation” policy.

It said CSPO has long been available in the market, and all of its key clients have access to the traceability of its supply chain via its “Open Palm Traceability Dashboard”, which provides them assurance on the origin of its CSPO products. “We would like to encourage Iceland to be part of the development and objective discussion on sustainable palm oil, and [have] a greater understanding on the tangible benefits of buying sustainable palm oil as a better solution for its business and the world at large.”

Meanwhile, Sime Darby Plantation added that it will continue to serve needs of its customers in the UK and throughout the EU, besides promoting sustainable palm oil in other emerging markets worldwide. Sime Darby’s share price closed unchanged today at RM5.59, for a market capitalisation of RM38.02 billion.
