PPBM proposes RM20m fine for members who defect after GE14

MO,17/1/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) is planning to impose RM20 million penalty for members who decide to jump ship in the event Pakatan Harapan wins in the 14th General Election (GE14). Its supreme council member Tariq Ismail, in a report by news portal Free Malaysia Today said, the reason PPBM made the proposal, somewhat similar to Pas’ ‘bai’ah’ oath, was to protect the opposition pact from losing its elected members.

He also expressed concern on the possibility of Pakatan Harapan lawmakers being offered money to leave the pact post GE14. “We don’t want those elected under our banner to defect to Barisan Nasional (BN), regardless of whether we win or lose the elections.

“That’s why it has been proposed that they sign a contract saying that if they do jump ship, it will cost them money,” he told the news portal. However, Tariq explained that the proposal has yet to be approved as PPBM would have to consult its lawyers to determine if the amount was reasonable. Under the Pas’ “bai’ah oath”, it was stated among others that elected members will have to divorce their wives if they quit the party.

64,000 personnel to be on duty during GE14

MO,18/1/2018, PASIR GUDANG: Police are conducting another round of training early next month to prepare their personnel for the general election, said Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Comm Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah. He said more than 64,000 officers and personnel will be on duty during the elections. They will be deployed throughout the country to ensure the polls are free of incidents, he added.

“The police have also taken into consideration the possibility of an increase in the number of seats or changes in constituencies.  “Our numbers are enough to ensure the general election goes on smoothly,” he said after an event marking the debut of the marine police’s RH FB speedboat at Dalac Marine Engineering and Services near Teluk Jawa here. Comm Zulkifli also said the marine police’s Southern Region Two would need more assets in Penebuk near Pengerang following the development of the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project.

He said Pengerang would be an important economic area for the country with many foreign vessels converging at Rapid once the project is completed. “The marine police require more manpower and assets such as new boats as well as an office,” he added. Currently, the marine police there are sharing premises with the Pengerang police, he said.

Comm Zulkifli also said the police were also looking at relocating the Southern Region Two’s headquarters, currently located in Tampoi, to Tanjung Pelepas because the waters at the current site had become shallow. “We have a plot of land there, about 32.3ha in size, where we hope to build a training centre and a new headquarters for the marine police,” he said.

Don’t be overconfident, Lajim tells Shafie

MO,17/1/2018, KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal was urged not to be arrogant and overconfident by snubbing the state opposition alliance, Gabungan Sabah. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah president Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin said no opposition political party can form the government in Sabah without an alliance in the coming 14th general election.

Lajim said as the former Barisan Nasional (BN) minister and Umno vice-president only recently entered the opposition fray, he was already being overconfident by dismissing any form of cooperation with other local parties in a recent statement. “Even if Warisan is unwilling to work with us, they should not talk bad about the leadership of other opposition parties (under the alliance) as we share a common purpose to topple the current BN government,” he said at a joint press conference with Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee.

Gabungan Sabah is an alliance comprising Harapan, SAPP, State Reform Party (Star) and Parti Perpaduan Rakyat Sabah. The alliance is chaired by former Sabah finance minister Datuk Mohd Noor Mansor. Lajim also branded Shafie a hypocrite for championing the “Sabah for Sabahans” and Malaysia Agreement 1963 only after losing his ministerial and party posts in the BN.

The issues have long been highlighted by parties under Gabungan Sabah, he said. As for Yong, he claimed Warisan appeared to be a proxy for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. Shafie recently called on Sabahans to accept Dr Mahathir as Pakatan Harapan’s prime minister-designate, should the coalition form the next government.

200 PKR members in Penang quit party, join MU

MO,17/1/2018, GEORGE TOWN: More than 200 PKR members walked out of the party today, citing the party’s subservience to DAP and inconsistency in its struggle, among others. Led by its Jelutong division assistant chief Lim Boon Miin, they handed over their membership forms to newly-formed party, Malaysian United Party (MU).

Lim, who joined PKR prior to the March 2008 general election, believing in its ‘Reformasi’ promise, claimed the party had deviated from its initial path, especially when they started to work with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM). He said the situation worsened after PKR joined Pakatan Rakyat (now Pakatan Harapan) coalition and lost its voice to DAP. “What is the point of us being in PKR when our voices are not heard? We are disappointed and the best thing for us to do is leave and fight from outside.

“We are certain that more people will follow our decision to leave the party soon,” he told a press conference at the MU office here today. Tens of members who joined him in quitting PKR were also present. Elaborating, Lim said those who decided to leave were also disappointed with the internal infighting in Pakatan Harapan, clearly showing signs of cracks and lack of understanding among one another.

“We cannot accept the fact that DAP, especially in Penang, is discriminating towards PKR assemblymen in the state. “We are also disappointed with PKR Selangor’s lack of consistency, by sidelining the initial struggle and supporting DAP. He also noted that, for their own personal interest, the PKR leadership was now working with Dr Mahathir and PPBM.

“It pains us to see that PKR has lost its sense of direction. “PKR was set up to fight Dr Mahathir for his inhumane treatment against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. “Now, the party is working with this very same man,” he lamented. Lim said to compound matters, the party leadership does not even support its own elected representatives when the Penang Chief Minister acted unfairly towards them.

Meanwhile, MU president Tan Gin Theam said for so many members to defect the party, it shows that they were aware that Pakatan Harapan is now dead and exist only in name. “Their consciousness stems from the fact that the DAP has been autocratic and dictatorial in its decision-making, and has always bullied and suppressed their Pakatan Harapan partners.” he added.

Penang BN tells state government to come clean on undersea tunnel project

MO,16/1/2018, GEORGE TOWN: Is the Penang government lying in relation to payments made for the proposed undersea tunnel project, Barisan Nasional asked. State BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng recently said the state government had not paid a single sen for the tunnel project but official documents proved otherwise.

Dishing out official documents from the state legislative assembly sitting on Nov 2 last year, Teng said the state government had disclosed then that it had paid RM11.2 million in cash to HSSI Sdn Bhd, a technical consultant appointed by the state government to review and certify the claims payment submitted by the contractor. “Is this not lying when the Penang government said not a single sen had been paid but only land swapped?

“Now, it seems that every single sen had been paid and land swapped at the expense of the people of Penang,” he told newsmen at the state Gerakan headquarters here this afternoon. Teng demanded the DAP-led administration to come clean and be truthful about the consultancy payment of a whopping RM11.2 million just for reviewing and certifying claims payment.

“Is this kind of payment not similar to those cases exposed by the Auditor General’s Report years ago of certain mismanagement, where a set of screwdrivers was bought for RM224.90 when the market price was reported at only RM32?” he asked. Teng said it was not possible for the state government to cry “separate payment” as any payment made formed part and parcel of the tunnel project.

Last week, Lim had told newsmen that the state government had not paid a single sen for the tunnel project so far. He had instead said that the state government had paid RM208 million for the completion of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) reports for the three paired roads, which is another component of the RM6.3 million mega infrastructure project.

He had also said that the payment for Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd was done through two land swaps, totalling 1.48ha, with a nett development cost of RM1,300 per sq ft. Referring to that, Teng said the state Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report, dated Oct 19, 2015 and tabled to the state legislative assembly, had clearly stated that the cost of conducting the EIA reports for the three paired roads would be borne by the contractor.

“Is this not another lie by the Penang government? So, in relation to the tunnel project, what has the state government been paying and how was it paid? “Please avoid lying because official documents proved otherwise. Stop the blatant lie and be competent, accountable and transparent to the people of Penang,” he said.

Teng said also raised the issue of the 20ha of land sold by the contractor to a subsidiary, although no work had started yet for the whole tunnel project. It was reported that on Jan 16, 2015, a subsidiary of the contractor signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to secure the rights to purchase 20ha of reclaimed land, valued at RM2.8 billion, from the contractor itself.

“First of all, why is this even allowed when works have yet to begin? Instead, the state government diverted the whole issue and said not a single sen had been paid so far for the tunnel project but land swapped. “Now, we are still awaiting the completion of the feasibility and detailed design studies, which have been delayed for more than 20 months.

“So, along the way, is there someone out there lying or is the Penang government lying? We demand to know the truth,” he noted, stressing that it was not for him to say whether the element of corruption was present along the way. He added that the matter was best left to the relevant authorities to investigate and bring to light. Teng also asserted that their scrutiny of the tunnel project was not indicative of them not supporting it, as alleged by the state government.

“Those are two different issues altogether. DAP has always been advocating democracy and we have every right to question them. Check and balance is very important in a democratic setting. “If not, why did they previously make a hue and cry over the Penang Outer Ring Road (PORR) project mooted by the previous BN-led administration? “We did not say they were not supportive then, even though they put a motion at the state legislative assembly sitting to defer the project.

“That is why we are saying the competent, accountable and transparent (CAT) administration advocated by the Penang government is no longer alive. CAT is dead and buried,” he said pointed out. The tunnel project had raised numerous controversies in recent months, especially on the high cost of the RM305 million feasibility studies as well as the 21-month delay in completing it.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has since initiated investigation into the issue, along with the land swap deal and the involvement of a fashion company in the controversial project. Two company officials, with the Datuk title, have been arrested to assist the MACC’s probe into the matter. The duo has since had their six-day remand order extended by another five days.

DAP, PKR jadi ‘harimau sarkas’ Mahathir

Hebat sungguh mainan Pengerusi PPBM, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

– theRakyat

Berhati-hatilah…

Selection of Dr M threatens to split Selangor PKR

MO,13/1/2018, KLANG: The selection of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as prime minister and deputy prime minister designates by the Pakatan Harapan leadership is threatening to split the Opposition front in Selangor. Not only is Selangor PKR in disagreement with its state DAP, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) counterparts, differen-ces are also brewing within the party.

Some veteran leaders are unhappy with the Selangor PKR members who are openly disputing the top leadership’s decision. Apparently, many Selangor PKR members were expecting their deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and Pribumi deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir to be the prime minister and deputy prime minister designates.

“Those protesting against the decision cannot be faulted because they were not informed about the selection before the convention,’’ added a PKR division leader who declined to be named. He said Dr Mahathir and Dr Wan Azizah were only selected on Friday evening by the presidential council and the announcement was made at the convention on Sunday.

But as a veteran party member, the division leader said, he understood the wisdom behind the decision. “Everyone has forgotten about Pribumi president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. “If Azmin and Mukhriz were to be named as top leadership designates, it would appear that Muhyiddin, who is more senior, has been sidelined,’’ he added. Selangor PKR information chief Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei said the protests were expected.

“They are voicing their opinion perhaps because they were not told earlier,” said Mat Shuhaimi. He added that PKR had a clear-cut process whereby all matters were first discussed at the division and state levels before going up to the national leadership.

This, he added, was not followed. Mat Shuhaimi said every party had the right to voice its support or dissent. Meanwhile, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said disagreements reflected the fact democracy was alive and well within the Pakatan parties.

“With any democracy there can always be room for discussion, debate and disagreements,’’ he said.

– theRakyat
