MACC: No raids conducted over Ijok land issue

SPRM_MACC_malaysian_anti-corruption_commission_27072015_TMIKAMAL_ARIFFIN_02

MO,22/2/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied raiding the Selangor Mentri Besar’s office and several other state government-linked offices over the land deal issue in Ijok. “Regarding the raid at the MB’s office… it is all fake news”, said its chief commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad.

“There was no raid at the Selangor Mentri Besar’s office or offices linked to the state. “Based on the latest information we received yesterday (Feb 21), we went to five companies including one legal firm and seized some necessary documents to assist investigations,” he told a press conference at the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Academy on Thursday (Feb 22).

On Monday (Feb 19), Selangor Barisan Nasional said it would lodge a report on the land issue in Ijok to the MACC within a week. Selangor Barisan information chief Datuk Dr Mohamed Satim Diman said several settlers would also lodge a report to the MACC as the compensation they received was not at the latest market price. The Selangor government, meanwhile, has denied having any role in the agreement between the developers and the settlers because the latter owned the land in Ijok.

Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali has since dismissed allegations of irregularities in the matter. He also explained that not all of the land given to the settlers more than 20 years ago was in dispute.

Teacher goes viral after ‘vandalising’ school wall

teacher doodle art

MO,22/2/22018, PETALING JAYA: Vandalism is usually associated with the damage of public property, but it is a different story for one teacher in Johor who was showered with praise for doodling on the walls of her schools. Sarah Muhammad Fauzi’s doodles, which are drawn with a whiteboard marker on the walls of SK Sri Pulai Perdana, Johor Baru, are not her first but she is undaunted in repeating the act of “vandalism”.

The English language teacher said she purposely likened the action to a form of vandalism, but that there is meaning between the lines.”It is not a form of vandalism with an intention to damage school property – it’s more of an outlet for me to express my feelings. That’s the way I calm myself. “I know students will pass by there when I’m busy doodling, so I insert messages in English to attract their attention,” she said

The 30-year-old had aimed to perfect the wall doodle in a month, but due to a lack of time will take longer to complete. The three-metre doodle was scribbled spontaneously with no specific theme, as it was done for fun. The educator, who hails from Penang, often uses unique approaches during learning sessions to stoke interest in her students about the English language subject.

“I’m the type that’s easily bored, so I wanted to create something new for them. I don’t see this as a talent, but more of a hobby,’ said Sarah. She added that she did not expect her post, which was uploaded on Sunday evening (Jan 18), to go viral and receive 3,013 shares and more than 11,000 likes. Netizen Liza Masrina Ibrahim commented: “So beautiful! Congrats, not every teacher would be willing to take on extra responsibilities in addition to their existing work. You are one of them.”

Its minister, Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, said 13 of the towers, costing RM31.2 million, would be built in Pitas, while the remaining eight towers, costing RM19.2 million, would be built in Kudat.

“We will implement it this year. First, the coverage, second is the speed and third, the cost,” he said. He said since there were still areas in Sabah which did not have Internet facility, it was the government’s responsibility to provide it.

Royals entitled to speak up

TMP

MO,22/2/2018, KUANTAN: The royal institution is entitled to give advice and comment on issues that are of interest to the rakyat, said Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah . He said this was in line with the constitutional monarchy system, that acts to maintain cultural and religious diversity, as well as stemming threats to the nation’s prosperity and security.

“This has been explained by Universiti Malaya law lecturer Emeritus Prof Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi, who said rulers may reprimand, advise and offer solutions when public harmony and unity is threatened. “This role became vital after the 2008 general election when the constitutional crisis involving the appointment of the Perlis, Perak, Selangor and Terengganu mentri besars were resolved through the credibility and discretion of the rulers,” he said today when officiating at the Wacana Diraja: Raja, Perlembagaan & Patriotisme event organised by the Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak).

Also present were Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob and Mubarak president Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman. Tengku Abdullah said constructive, patriotic people would question and criticise to improve the country. They would feel anger and shame over the inappropriate actions of some that might negatively impact the country. “This is contrary to the concept of blind patriotism, where they refuse to criticise and be criticised. They believe that all their policies, rules and actions are good, accurate and are faultless.

“These blind patriots will only bring problems to the country, because this kind of thinking is the basis of an authoritarian government, and I call on all to emulate a constitutional monarch that practises constructive patriotism.” Tengku Abdullah also said the role of the royal institution as a symbol of unity was still relevant, as the country possesses diverse political, social, religious and economic demographics.

“Our country’s uniqueness requires an independent institution of high position to advise and give opinions. ‘If such an institution does not exist, then the patriotism, unity and loyalty of the rakyat towards the nation will deteriorate,” he said.

Tindakan pantas bomba selamatkan nyawa mangsa

LABUAN 22 FEBRUARI 2018. Penolong Penguasa Bomba Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia (JBPM) Labuan, Pain Muzal memberi rawatan awal kepada mangsa dalam kejadian kemalangan di Jalan Patau-Patau, di Labuan. NSTP/IHSAN PAIN MUZAL.

Malaysian bond yields spike amid volatile markets

RAM

MO,22/2/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian bond yields faced upward pressure in tandem with increasing global yields amid the volatile world markets, said RAM Rating Services Bhd. It said global stock markets underwent a massive sell-off and correction in early February. “The turmoil had followed the release of US wage data and President Trump’s proposed expansionary budget, which signalled a possibly faster-than-expected acceleration in inflation.

“This may, in turn, hasten the pace of the US Federal Reserve’s rate-tightening cycle and increase the attractiveness of bond investments,” it said. RAM said the yield on the 10-year US Treasury had rallied to 2.72 per cent as at end-January and rose further to 2.91 per cent in mid-February. It said in line with rising global yields, those of Malaysian Government Securities (MGS) spiked up towards the end of January. The yield of one-year MGS had increased 28 basis points month-on-month to 3.19 per cent by end-January, and has exceeded 3.2 per cent since then.

Similarly, the 10-year MGS posted a 4.6 basis points month-on-month rise in yield to 3.96 per cent as at end-January, before increasing further to 4.04 per cent in mid-February. “The second US government shutdown for the year – albeit short-lived – had also contributed to the widespread capital market volatility. “Although the global stock markets have stopped plummeting, we cannot discount the risk of further market response to rising interest rates,” it said.

RAM said foreign investors had increased their holdings of Malaysian bonds by RM4.5 billion in January, elevating the value of foreign bond holdings to RM211.2 billion, representing a 2.2 per cent growth month-on-month. “The inflows were mainly driven by demand for government securities, which posted a cumulative net inflow of RM4.9 billion at month–end. “We believe the rise was also supported by expectations of rising domestic interest rates, coupled with the strengthening ringgit in January,” it said.

RAM said amid steady economic growth, Bank Negara Malaysia raised the overnight policy rate by 25 basis points to 3.25 per cent during the recent Monetary Policy Committee meeting in January – the first hike in more than three years. The Malaysian corporate bond market kicked off 2018 with RM9.6 billion of bond and sukuk issuance in January, in contrast to the sluggish RM1.6 billion a year earlier.

Notably, RM8.6 billion of this amount originated from the private sector. Similarly, issuance of government bonds, including short-term papers, came in at a healthy RM13.5 billion.
