Lee Chong Wei Rise of the Legend sarat permainan emosi

BACA: Filem Lee Chong Wei diiktiraf Malaysia Book of Records & Asia Book of Records

Demand for cryptomining sees AMD’s graphics card market share rise

Demand for cryptomining sees AMD’s graphics card market share rise

The cryptocurrency craze has had some interesting effects on the graphics card market.

Mining cryptocurrency requires powerful and efficient graphics cards, which has led to a high demand for graphics cards, thereby driving prices up.

Obviously, this isn’t good for gamers but graphics card makers are also wary about overextending themselves, considering the volatility of cryptocurrencies, and producing more than they can sell.

In any case, AMD’s performance advantage in mining certain cryptocurrency has had a positive effect so far for the company.

Jon Peddie Research estimates that AMD’s graphics card market share for Q4 2017 is at 33.7%.

This is up 6.5% from the quarter before and it is the highest it has ever been for AMD since Q2 2014

The report also says that demand for high-end and mid-range graphics card continues to grow, whereas the market for mainstream entry-level cards is more or less the same.

Despite the strong demand for graphics card due to cryptomining, both AMD and NVIDIA have reiterated that their commitment is to gamers and will continue to monitor demand closely.

That said, they can’t restrict sales of cards to miners so don’t expect prices of graphics cards to fall any time soon.

Alarming rise of unsafe deliveries

MO,14/2/2018, PETALING JAYA: The sharp rise in unsafe deliveries involving “doula” (birth coach) services is alarming, the Health Ministry said today. Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 58 recorded cases of unsafe deliveries in Johor last year, in which five took place at home, involving a doula.

“There has been a rise in unsafe deliveries related to gentle birthing (a home programme teaching couples self-hypnosis for childbirth) advocacies driven by individuals or groups known as doulas,” he said in a statement. “More worrying, two of those cases were high-risk ones that required deliveries at hospitals, but they (mothers) still chose to do it at home after being incited by certain quarters.”

Noor Hisham said in comparison, only 35 unsafe deliveries were recorded in Johor in 2016, with no cases of doula reported. He added ministry statistics also showed that there had been two deaths of the mother giving birth in 2013 and another two deaths of babies during delivery, in 2016 and 2018 respectively, which involved doula services. He was responding to the death of a baby during a botched home delivery at a house in Pulai, Johor on Feb 4, believed to have involved a doula.

He confirmed that the baby had died due to asphyxia (suffocation) after the head got stuck in the mother’s perineum while undergoing a breech delivery at home, with the help of an individual who is not a trained health official. He added that that none of the ministry’s staff has been called up by police to provide their statement to date, but officials from the Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor have submitted a report to the police with relevant evidence regarding the case.

Noor Hisham also reminded that those who practises midwifery but are not registered with the Malaysia Midwives Board could face a fine not more than RM2,000, or a jail term of not more than a year, or both. He said the mother giving birth or the guardian could also file a civil suit against the doula should there be any complication or death during delivery, with sufficient proof that it (death) was caused by the doula.

Noor Hisham also said the country recorded a 98% safe delivery rate by skilled health personnel since 2009. A mere 0.42% unsafe deliveries by skilled health personnel were recorded in 2016, down from 24.8% in 1990.

Robin Williams death linked to rise in copycat suicides

LOS ANGELES: Suicide rates in the United States spiked almost 10 percent following the death in 2014 of actor Robin Williams, and spiked even more among men and those who ended their lives, like Williams, by suffocation, according to a study published on Wednesday.

The study, published in the scientific journal PLOS One, found that in the five months from August to December 2104 some 18,690 deaths by suicide were recorded – an increase of 9.85 percent from the expected number of cases for the period.

Williams, the Oscar-winning star of “Good Morning, Vietnam” who was beloved for his humour, died in August 2014 at age 63 in a suicide that shocked fans worldwide. Authorities said he died of asphyxia after hanging himself at his home in northern California. An autopsy found that Williams was suffering from Lew body dementia, which causes a progressive decline in mental ability.

Suicides following Williams’ death rose by 12.9 percent in men aged 30-44, and the study found a 32 percent increase in the number of deaths from suffocation.

Although the study could not prove a definitive link, it said there appeared to be a connection. Extensive media coverage of Williams’ death “might have proved the necessary stimulus for high-risk segments of the U.S. population (e.g. middle-aged men in despair) to move from suicidal ideation to attempt.”

While the effects of widely reported celebrity suicides have previously been linked to increases in the wider population, the study said media coverage of Williams’ suicide was particularly detailed and sensational and was amplified through social media.

The suicide in 1994 of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, for example, appeared to have a minimal impact on suicide rates in his Seattle home town, partly because of more restricted reporting, the study said.

“The media industry can positively or negatively influence imitation suicides,” the study said. “Popular news media headlines suggest that media guidelines for suicide reporting were not followed in the case of Mr. Williams.”

The study used data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Allardyce makes instant impact as Everton rise into top half

LIVERPOOL: Everton manager Sam Allardyce’s ability to quickly get teams out of relegation trouble is the defining characteristic of his management career but his impact at Goodison Park has been so swift he is already looking at a top-half finish.

Everton’s 3-1 win over Swansea City on Monday pushed the Merseysiders up to ninth in the Premier League and the worries of a long scrap against the drop already seem a distant memory.

“The target now? Top half but let’s not get carried away,” said former England manager Allardyce after second-half goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney, with a penalty, had secured a comeback victory over the bottom-placed Welsh club.

Everton were in the relegation zone when they sacked Dutchman Ronald Koeman on Oct 23 following a humiliating 5-2 loss at home to Arsenal.

The club’s Under-23 coach David Unsworth then had an extended spell as caretaker manager during which he managed just two wins in eight games.

Unsworth’s second and final win, a 4-0 success against West Ham United, came with Allardyce already watching from the stands and, while he was not on the bench for that game, he is making sure that victory counts on his record.

Since formally taking the role, Everton have beaten Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United and drawn at local rivals Liverpool before Monday’s win.

“To collect 13 out of 15 points is outstanding considering the position where we have come from,” said Allardyce.

“We have scored 11 goals in five games and kept clean sheets. We are a team that comes back from 1-0 down to win and that shows the character.”

Allardyce, 63, has never had a team of his relegated from the Premier League, despite working with clubs such as Sunderland and Crystal Palace who were in deep trouble when he took over.

He managed to maintain top flight football for clubs such as Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers and took West Ham back into the Premier League – and kept them there – after their relegation.

Focusing on solid defending and good organisation has again brought results for the man dubbed ‘Fireman Sam’ but he said his assistants, such as former Leicester City boss Craig Shakespeare and veteran coach Sammy Lee, deserved their share of the credit.

“From a tactical point of view, I’ve simplified the game and I’m man-managing the players. I brought some experienced and talented staff with me, along with the rest of the staff – I want everyone to get better. To turn around so quickly is great credit to everyone. Not just me,” he said.

“What looked like a desperate situation is becoming a comfortable one. And now people are looking up the table rather than down. The last clubs I took over were tougher to turn around initially,” he said.

The next test for Everton comes against third-placed champions Chelsea at Goodison on Saturday.

“We’ve got to try and get a result against Chelsea and then we’ll really know what we’re made of,” added Allardyce.

“With this confidence, if we can get a result we’re on the right track for finishing as high as we can. Let’s see if the lads can pull one out of the bag.”
