No sign of Malay tsunami from Langkawi

MO,16/4/2018, PETALING JAYA: The stage is set for Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister to break his own 22-year record at the top job. He chose Langkawi for the formal announcement of his candidacy, a place where he had brought so much development to. The announcement was made by the wife of his one-time nemesis on a hot and sultry evening that was pregnant with symbolism as well as irony.

Once the most powerful man in Malaysia, he is now using the symbol of the party he tried – and failed – to kill off. The choice of Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to announce him as the candidate for the Langkawi parliament seat was to show that they are committed to each other, and that Dr Mahathir has the support of the man he once accused of corruption and sodomy. Can politics in Malaysia get any stranger?

Kedah holds the record of producing two prime ministers and if things go well for Dr Mahathir, Kedah may hold the record of having the oldest Malaysian premier ever. The idea may seem strange, but Pakatan Harapan supporters find it perfectly fine – or at least that is what they say. As Juhari Bulat, the Pribumi candidate for Ayer Hangat put it, the late Kedah Sultan became the King in his eighties, so why can’t Dr Mahathir become prime minister in his nineties?

There is a big difference actually – a prime minister’s job is much more demanding that that of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s. And Dr Mahathir did look his age that evening as he spoke on his usual litany of kleptocracy, failed state, bankrupt nation and corruption. Given that Langkawi is like his second home and that the night belonged to him, he appeared rather shaky and could not quite remember the names of some of those on stage.

His spirit to unseat Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is strong, but his age and health are two factors that are working against him. Moreover, it is hard to see how Dr Wan Azizah’s speech and message that night could have convinced the Langkawi audience that she is deputy prime minister material. Of those who spoke that night, only Pribumi president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin came across as prime minister material. Amanah president Mohamed Sabu was very amusing but if Pakatan comes to power, he will be the Ahmad Mazlan of the Pakatan government.

The Dr Mahathir event managed to draw quite a good crowd but it was not the type of crowd that is a harbinger of a Malay tsunami. The audience was polite and respectful but it was quite evident that many of them were curious spectators because each time the emcee tried to get them to join him in shouting “Reformasi!”, most of them did not join in. It was thus unsurprising that even before the ceramah was over, the Pakatan side was flooding social media with pictures of massive crowds and claiming that these were scenes from Langkawi.

But it was untrue. The photographs were crowd scenes from what appeared to be a DAP ceramah in Johor during the 13th General Election. There was even a PAS flag fluttering in one of the pictures. Among all the Pakatan partners, DAP is most anxious to convince its audience that a Malay tsunami is on the way and that “Tun Mah”, as they call Dr Mahathir, will be the one making it happen. DAP is heavily invested in Dr Mahathir because they need the Malay tsunami to make the Chinese voters believe that Barisan will fall. Will Langkawi be the staging point for Dr Mahathir to topple Najib? Can the odd pairing of the two doctors persuade Malaysians to come along?

Dr Mahathir is loved and respected in Langkawi. The people will always be grateful how he turned their island into a world-famous tourism destination. Will the people of Langkawi return the favour and deliver victory to him? So many questions and so few answers from this beautiful island. There has been no sign of the promised Malay tsunami. Initially, we were told that it would become evident once Parliament is dissolved. Now we are told that it will only happen once the candidates are known on nomination day. Time, it appears, is running out for Dr Mahathir to bring on the Malay tsunami.

The Kind of Parent You’ll Be, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

Aries (March 21–April 19)

Angry male person looking at his sonYAKOBCHUK VIACHESLAV/ShutterstockYour zodiac sign will influence the way you parent, says life coach, spiritual guide, and astrologer Linda Furiate. She helps Reader’s Digest break down your parenting strengths and weaknesses based on your birthdate. For an Aries, the idea of having a child may be more appealing than day-to-day reality, she says. “Aries themselves are somewhat childlike in nature, and they either shun the responsibility or they may be a parent who exposes the child to many new opportunities.” Aries can be a great role model for children because of natural leadership skills, but because an Aries is quick to anger, they have to take special care to rein in frustration when they can’t meet their child’s needs. Check out what 2018 has in store for you based on your Chinese zodiac.

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

Happy moments together.Alena Ozerova/ShutterstockFiercely loyal and committed to comfort, a Taurus parent will seek to create an ideal environment and lifestyle for their child. “A Taurus parent will teach the child the value of self-worth,” Furiate says, “and doing the right thing.” Taken too far, this approach can result in too much pampering. She advises Taurus parents to avoid spending too much money indulging their child’s every wish—they must be careful not to spoil their child.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

Their top priority for their child is education, says Furiate: “They will want to read to the child often.” Geminis also see the educational value of socializing. “The parent may encourage the child to spend time with their cousins, close relatives and schoolmates to learn and grow.” Because a Gemini is so keen to instruct their child, though, they have to be aware of how they communicate. “A weakness may be that the parent talks at the child and not to the child.”

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

A Cancer parent may love to plan and prepare elaborate family meals as a way of sharing quality time with their children, explains Furiate. Cancers may be prone to over-protectiveness, though: “Often, a Cancer parent will smother a child with their love,” says Furiate. This could lead the child to rebel.

Leo (July 23–August 22)

Mother and kids sitting at wooden dock enjoying ocean viewBlueOrange Studio/Shutterstock“A Leo parent has the potential to be playful and fun,” Furiate says. “Leos love the energy of a child and may wish for and have more than the average number of children.” Leos enjoy life and always try to look on the bright side, which is why they relate so well to children, says Furiate. Leos can be childlike, so being a parent and sharing time with a child is a means for the Leo to maintain his or her youth, she explains. A Leo parent’s favorite activity is taking vacations or weekend trips with their child. Check out your ideal vacation according to your zodiac sign.

Virgo (August 23–September 22)

Furiate believes people with this sign “may make the perfect parent.” They can be a fair disciplinarian and cater to their child’s emotions. The only potential pitfall can be a Virgo’s desire for perfection, warns Furiate—they have to be wary of setting impossibly high standards for their kid. “The Virgo parent may want to micromanage the daily habits of the child.”

Libra (September 23–October 22)

Two male siblings sharing attention of their mothershurkin_son/ShutterstockBecause Libra is the sign best at managing relationships, they tend to be the best at co-parenting, says Furiate. (By the way, these are the zodiac signs that should never, ever date each other.) A Libra parent understands the family dynamic well and is able to solve most family disputes with relative ease. “A Libra would prefer to use kind words to talk to the child rather than resort to anger or authority.” The only thing a Libra parent has to be wary of is permissiveness; they can be too lax and let a child take advantage of them.

Scorpio (October 23–November 21)

A determined sign with impressive resolve, Scorpios expect their children to develop the same qualities. “The Scorpio parent may teach the child to be strong and to stand up for what they believe in,” says Furiate. While passing on this kind of strength is crucial, tough love does have its limits. A Scorpio has to actively maintain a level of sensitivity, otherwise, they may overwhelm their children.

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)

Young man and little boy watching something on smart phone and enjoying while on road trip.Jacob Lund/ShutterstockSagittarians are all about having a good time. They love to travel and experience new things and they pass that sense of wanderlust and zest for life onto their child. They’ll encourage their offspring to explore their own desires, Furiate says. While children do need a free hand and a sense of adventure, they also need stability. Children rely on structure, and this is where the Sagittarius parent may come up short. “The child may often feel they have no permanent grounding,” she says, something this type of parent needs to work to establish. “Thankfully, the child of a Sag parent will benefit from the numerous opportunities to expand their awareness of the richness and wonder of the world around them.”

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

Father teaching his son to ride a bikePeter Bernik/ShutterstockBecause they take an all-work, no-play approach to their own lives, Capricorns can become strict parents. They crave success and achievement and want their children to strive for excellence. “A Capricorn parent may run a tight ship,” Furiate says, “treating their offspring like soldiers rather than children. A highly structured and disciplined lifestyle may be encouraged or enforced.” This kind of parenting style can have various results. Some children respond well to this sort of upbringing, she says, and it can inspire them to achieve great success. But a child who is not ready or strong enough to meet their parent’s expectations will crack under the pressure. “This strong need for control and discipline by the Capricorn parent may intimidate a child. This may induce a fear within the child to not want to grow up and take responsibility on their own.” According to Furiate, this may result in a child developing self-destructive habits such as an addiction.

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

Smiling mother and daughter in a cafekikovic/ShutterstockAquarians are highly individual and idiosyncratic, making it difficult for them to find common ground with others—even their own child. “An Aquarian parent may often be less forthcoming with their feelings,” Furiate says, “even sharing their love with their child.” This can lead to a weak or detached parent-child bond. For Aquarius, the prime of their parenting life comes into play later, when the child grows up and is able to express themselves on a more adult level. At this stage, the Aquarian parent will re-engage with their offspring: “It is important to the Aquarian parent that the child use their logic, brilliance, and mental capacity to make their mark on the world.”

Pisces (February 19–March 20)

Mother Helps Stressed Teenage Daughter With HomeworkMonkey Business Images/ShutterstockKnown to be incredibly empathetic, Pisces are naturally attuned to their children’s feelings. “Pisces make excellent parents as they are gifted at caring for others,” explains Furiate. The trap for Pisces is that they can blow things out of proportion. Because they feel emotions so intensely, a Pisces parent has the potential to overreact to everyday difficulties and interfere in a child’s life when the child might learn more from solving their own problems, says Furiate. “Unfortunately, this may confuse the child.”

Messages Pilots Send With the Seat Belt Sign

the-secret-signals-pilots-send-with-seatbelt-signs-109289483-Natali-GladoNatali Glado/ShutterstockA seat belt sign seems self-explanatory enough: Stay seated, and latch your seat belt. Once it’s off, you can feel free to get up and stretch your legs or head to the bathroom. But crew members know the ins and outs of what it really means when that symbol is lit up—and it’s a bit more complicated than you realized.

The plane is taking off soon

Just because you’ve been told to stay in your seat doesn’t mean the flight crew has to—yet. Airlines have their own rules about what the chimes you hear mean, but if you hear two dings, then see the seat belt sign flash, the pilot could be warning the crew to sit down because the plane is about to take off, says former Virgin Atlantic flight attendant Laura Hutcheson tells the Washington Post. (Learn about the code behind chimes, announcements, and other in-flight noises.)

You’re about to land

That same signal the captain uses to communicate takeoff time is also used when the plane is about to land, Hutcheson adds. “It is the final sign from the captain for the crew to take their seats,” she says.

The plane is parked

Ever notice hear a crew member tell you to stay in your seat until the plane reaches the terminal, only to see the seatbelt sign turn off almost immediately? The captain turns the seat belt sign off when the plane is parked, but that doesn’t mean passengers should start getting up, says Hutcheson. “Although the aircraft is at a standstill and passengers believe that it is safe to get up and start getting their bags, the aircraft could still move unexpectedly, which could result in passengers injuring themselves,” she says.

Now that you know that airplane secret, check out these other hidden features you never knew you could find on airplanes.

Two years on, MACC chief still hopeful Selangor will sign corruption-free pledge

MO,30/1/2018, SELAYANG: It has been two years, yet the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) continues to wait for the Selangor state government to sign the corruption-free pledge (IBR), says Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad . “We have been waiting patiently for two years. We have not given up. But so far, we have not received any response from them,” the MACC Chief Commissioner told reporters after an IBR signing ceremony by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama). “Agencies under the Selangor state government have signed the pledge and we are now waiting for the state government.

“Hopefully they will do so before the coming general election,” Dzulkifli said, adding that he did not know why Selangor had not signed the IBR. On Monday, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said the state was committed to supporting the IBR initiated by the MACC, but added that the administration sees the IBR alone as insufficient. He said there were several additional measures that the state administration had already implemented at the state level.

For example, he said, all state executive councillors have to sign a declaration about their interests in matters discussed at the weekly exco meeting, which he felt was more effective than just taking an oath. The Mentri Besar added he would be meeting newly-appointed Selangor MACC chief Datuk Alias Salim soon to explain the state government’s stance on the matter.

Kemudi becomes first media club to sign MACC’s corruption-free pledge

MO,20/1/2018, KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Media Club (Kemudi) has become the first association of its kind in the country to sign the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) corruption-free pledge.

The ceremony, which was held at a hotel here on Saturday, was attended by 80 Kemudi members, including its president, Mohd Zailani Abdul Rahman.

The event was witnessed by Kelantan’s MACC director Datuk Moh Samsuddin Yusof.

In his speech earlier, Moh commended Kemudi for taking the pledge.

“The decision by Kemudi to require that its member take the pledge should be followed by other media clubs. It demonstrates that there is awareness among members of the press of the importance of taking the pledge,” he said.

Moh added that he hopes the press would also help the commission in educating the public on the scourge of corruption and its impact on society.
