MO,13/2/2018, LAHAD DATU: Abd Rahim KK Hain has not stopped playing a role in safeguarding his community, after retiring from the police force. Having served as a General Operation Force personnel during Op Daulat five years ago, the retired corporal had since 2014 joined the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela). Rahim, 62, believes he still has what it takes to protect the people of Tanjung Labian, a coastal stretch made up of 10 villages.
Back then Rahim was attached to the GOF 17th Battalion when followers of the self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu Jamalul Kiram III entered isolated Kampung Tanduo within the Felda Sahabat estate in February 2013 to stake claim over Sabah. He now leads a group of Rela members, who are attached to the corps’s Community Service Centre (PKK) at Tanjung Labian, which saw the fiercest gun battle between the security forces and the intruders.
“In Op Daulat, I was deployed at the Tanjung Labian post to tighten security control at the village when security forces began mopping-up operations at Kampung Tanduo from Mar 5. “I remember the following day, we were instructed to be prepared as there were presence of Kiram fighters in Tanjung Batu and I was told by villagers the armed group leader Agbimuddin Kiram was looking for me after knowing I was a policeman ,” he told Harian Metro.
Rahim, who hails from Tanjung Labian, said he never once feared the Sulu fighters and was ready to sacrifice his life to protect the country from terrorists. “Although I have retired from the police force in 2014, I still want to continue fighting in protecting the safety and security particularly in Tanjung Labian,” he stressed.
The Tanjung Labian Rela outpost was formed as a result of discussion with Labian Zone Community Chief Asafal Alian. The centre was set up at the entrance junction to Tanjung Batu to assist security forces on patrol duty. Abd Rahim noted the security in Tanjung Labian and Tanjung Batu is now at the highest level and villagers can carry out their daily lives as usual.
